Alsace, located in the northeast of France, is a renowned wine region known for its exceptional wines. Bordered by the Vosges Mountains to the west and the Rhine River to the east, Alsace enjoys a semi-continental climate favorable to viticulture, with warm and sunny summers and cool autumns, ideal for grape ripening.

Alsace wines are distinguished by their purity, freshness, and remarkable aromatic expressiveness, reflecting both the unique terroir and the diverse grape varieties cultivated in the region.

Among the emblematic grape varieties of Alsace, we find:

      • Riesling : Riesling is the king of Alsatian grape varieties. It gives rise to elegant, dry white wines with remarkable liveliness. Riesling wines reveal delicate aromas of citrus fruits, white fruits, and minerals, with an incredible aging potential.

      • Gewurztraminer : Gewurztraminer is an aromatic grape variety that produces rich and intense white wines, often off-dry to sweet. These wines exhibit floral aromas, lychee, rose, and exotic spices, offering an enchanting sensory experience.

      • Pinot Gris : Pinot Gris, also known as Tokay Pinot Gris, gives rise to rich, sweet, and generous white wines. These wines are characterized by aromas of yellow fruits, honey, and dried fruits, with a luscious texture on the palate.

      • Pinot Blanc : Pinot Blanc is a versatile grape variety that produces dry, fresh, and easy-to-drink white wines. These wines reveal aromas of white-fleshed fruits and flowers, making them perfect companions for light dishes and aperitifs.

      • Sylvaner : Sylvaner is a more discreet grape variety, but it gives rise to light, fresh, and pleasant-to-drink white wines. They reveal subtle aromas of fresh fruits and white flowers.

      • Muscat : Muscat is an aromatic grape variety that can be used to produce dry, off-dry, or sweet white wines. They are distinguished by their aromas of fresh grapes and flowers, with a slight muscat note.

In Alsace, some of the top-quality wines are classified under the Alsace Grand Cru designation. The Alsace Grand Cru classification is reserved for wines produced from specific vineyard sites that have demonstrated exceptional terroir and consistently high-quality wines. Currently, there are 51 recognized Grand Cru vineyards in Alsace, each with its unique characteristics and grape varieties. These wines are subject to strict regulations and must adhere to specific production requirements, including lower yield limits and longer aging periods. Alsace Grand Cru wines are highly sought after and celebrated for their complexity, finesse, and aging potential, making them a true expression of the best of Alsace's winemaking tradition.

Alsace wines are classified according to different levels of sweetness :

  • Dry: Wines with no residual sugar, offering great freshness and clear aromas.
  • Off-dry: Slightly sweet wines, balancing freshness with subtle sweetness.
  • Medium-sweet: Sweet wines with richness and ripe fruit aromas.
  • Sweet: Very sweet wines, made from late-harvested grapes, offering complex flavors of candied fruits and honey.

Alsace wines are versatile and can pair well with a variety of dishes, from Alsatian specialties like sauerkraut and tarte flambée to international dishes such as seafood, cheeses, and spicy dishes. The diversity of grape varieties and styles makes Alsace wines an essential region for wine enthusiasts seeking discoveries and gustatory pleasures.
