Domaine Guffens-Heynen stands as the ultimate reference in the Mâconnais, thanks to the visionary genius of Jean-Marie Guffens. Established in 1979 in Pierreclos and Vergisson, this 5.65-hectare estate produces Chardonnay of exceptional purity, tension and depth that rivals the finest white Burgundies. The wines — Mâcon-Pierreclos Chavigne, Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Jus des Hauts de Vignes — consistently achieve critical acclaim, driven by exacting viticulture, very low yields (37-38 hl/ha) and vinification of surgical precision.

The history of Domaine Guffens-Heynen begins in 1976, when Maine and Jean-Marie Guffens-Heynen, a young Flemish couple who came to learn French and discover wine, settled in Burgundy. Nothing destined them for viticulture — Jean-Marie had studied architecture and theatre, Maine fine arts — yet their encounter with the Mâconnais transformed their trajectory. Jean-Marie enrolled at the viticultural school in Davayé whilst Maine worked for local growers. In 1979, the couple took the founding step: acquiring a few steep parcels in Pierreclos that nobody wanted. The domaine's first vintage emerged in 1980, challenging and underripe. The second, 1981, froze. But 1982 marked the first success and caught the attention of Robert Parker, who praised a "crazy Belgian" capable of making Mâcon as great as Puligny. In 1990, aware that the domaine's production — a mere 2,500 cases — could not satisfy his ambition, Jean-Marie founded the négociant house Verget, pioneering at a time when buying grapes was not yet respectable in Burgundy. Domaine Guffens-Heynen continued its course, defying established hierarchies and proving vintage after vintage that greatness is not confined to the crus of the Côte d'Or.

The Domaine Guffens-Heynen vineyard extends across 5.65 hectares in the communes of Pierreclos, Vergisson and Davayé, at the heart of the southern Mâconnais. The soils alternate between clay-limestone, pure limestone and stony zones, offering a unique palette of expressions for Chardonnay. The flagship parcels — Chavigne in Pierreclos (3.65 hectares on slopes reaching 40%), Les Croux and Les Crays in Pouilly-Fuissé, and the Saint-Véran parcels acquired in 2008 — each present a distinct geological identity. The vines, aged between 15 and 85 years, sink their roots deep into these altitude terroirs. Jean-Marie's philosophy rests on an approach he terms "non-cultivation": a single, very shallow ploughing, permanent natural grass cover, no leaf removal or hedging, allowing the vine to express itself freely. Yields are drastically limited — averaging 37 to 38 hl/ha, with tiny clusters and concentrated berries. Harvesting is done exclusively by hand, in multiple successive passes to select grapes at optimal maturity. This absolute rigour in the vineyard constitutes, according to Jean-Marie, the sole foundation of greatness in the cellar.

The Domaine Guffens-Heynen range comprises some twenty cuvées produced exclusively from Chardonnay, covering the appellations Pouilly-Fuissé, Mâcon-Pierreclos, Mâcon-Vergisson and Saint-Véran. At the summit of the hierarchy, the Pouilly-Fuissé cuvées — Premier Jus des Hauts de Vignes, Premiers Jus des Premiers Crus, Croux et Petits Croux, C.C. — embody the quintessence of the Guffens style: phenomenal concentration, vibrant acidity, chalky minerality, electric tension. The Mâcon-Pierreclos cuvées, including the legendary Juliette et les Vieilles de Chavigne and Premier Jus de Chavigne, rival effortlessly the grands crus of the Côte de Beaune. The style is immediately recognisable: crystalline purity of fruit, an almost red tannin-like presence conferred by phenomenal dry extract, exceptional longevity — the wines age gracefully for two decades. In the cellar, the cardinal principle is absolute precision: gentle pressing with a modified vertical Coquard press (rare in Burgundy), meticulous separation of juices, fermentation with indigenous yeasts, ageing in oak barrels (proportion of new wood varying according to vintage and parcel) with repeated bâtonnage. The philosophy can be summed up in a phrase borrowed from Nietzsche: "let the wine become what it already is".

Jean-Marie Guffens is one of the world's most gifted Chardonnay winemakers, an iconoclastic figure and unclassifiable artist in the Burgundian vineyard. Belgian by birth, trained at the lycée in Davayé after studying architecture and theatre, he embodies the vigneron-researcher who recognises no school — neither traditionalist nor modernist, he charts his own course with unshakeable conviction: that the Mâconnais can produce wines as great as, if not superior to, those of the Côte d'Or. Provocative, perfectionist, gifted with a formidable turn of phrase and uncompromising standards, he has revolutionised the perception of an entire region. Since the early 2020s, Jean-Marie has been supported on a daily basis by Julien Desplans, a brilliant oenologist trained at Château Palmer and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, who joined the team in 2006 and has since overseen the day-to-day management of the domaine as well as winemaking at Maison Verget. Their collaboration, founded on a shared vision and remarkable complementarity, has enabled the domaine to reach new qualitative heights. Guffens-Heynen wines are regularly hailed by William Kelley (Wine Advocate) and Jancis Robinson as among the finest white Burgundies — worldwide recognition for an estate that has never ceased to defy conventions.
