Château La Conseillante stands as one of the finest estates in the Pomerol appellation on the Right Bank of Bordeaux. Owned by the Nicolas family since 1871, this 12-hectare property neighbours some of the region's most illustrious names — Pétrus, Vieux Château Certan, and Cheval Blanc. The vineyard is planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc on a mosaic of clay and gravel soils enriched with iron deposits. Since 2015, Marielle Cazaux has been managing director, working alongside co-managers Bertrand and Jean-Valmy Nicolas and consultant Michel Rolland. The wines are renowned for their elegance, finesse, and distinctive violet and truffle aromatics.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Château La Conseillante dates back to the mid-18th century, when Catherine Conseillan, an influential Libourne merchant, acquired the estate and gave it the feminine version of her surname. Nicknamed "the Iron Lady", she undertook an extensive renovation programme and extended the vineyard to 12 hectares, structured as a mosaic of parcels that remains unchanged to this day. In 1871, the Nicolas family, already established in Libourne with their négociant business Nicolas Frères, purchased the estate. Louis Nicolas, the eldest son, took the helm and in the 1880s brought fresh momentum: technical innovations, drainage works, and the fight against phylloxera. A visionary, he co-founded the Syndicat Viticole de Pomerol in 1900, becoming its first president, and designed the estate's iconic label — a silver shield surrounding the letter "N" and a violet capsule evoking the wine's violet aromatics. In 1971, a major renovation introduced the first temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks in Pomerol. Since 2003, Bertrand and Jean-Valmy Nicolas, representing the fifth generation, have upheld this legacy with the same rigour, marked in 2012 by the construction of a circular plot-by-plot vat room designed by Bernard Mazières.

Le terroir

The vineyard of Château La Conseillante covers 12 hectares on the eastern edge of the Pomerol plateau, on the border with Saint-Émilion. This privileged position, surrounded by Pétrus, L'Évangile, Vieux Château Certan, and Cheval Blanc, gives it a unique character: one foot in Pomerol, the other in Saint-Émilion. The terroir consists of a mosaic of 16 distinct parcels with varied soils — grey and red clay in the north-east, sandy gravel in the south-west, with deposits of iron-rich crasse de fer and blue clay. This diversity allows Merlot (80% of the plantings) to thrive on the clay soils, bringing roundness and depth, while Cabernet Franc (20%) finds on the gravel the warmth and drainage it requires. The average age of the vines is 35 years. Since 2016, the estate has been certified ISO 14001 and HVE 3, reflecting responsible viticulture: over 80% organic products, use of biodynamic and biocontrol techniques, and cover crops including clover and oats to enrich the soils. In 2023, a 0.5-hectare parcel of Cabernet Sauvignon was planted, intended to enrich future blends.

Les vins

The range of Château La Conseillante comprises two wines: the grand vin Château La Conseillante, a flagship of the Pomerol appellation, and the second wine Duo de Conseillante, introduced in 2007. The grand vin blend is based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, vinified plot by plot in 22 concrete vats adapted to the size of each terroir. Cold pre-fermentation maceration for five days, alcoholic fermentation, then ageing for 18 months in barrels — 70% new oak, complemented by second-fill casks and, depending on the vintage, a small proportion in amphorae. The La Conseillante style is immediately recognisable: elegance, finesse, silky tannins, and velvety texture. In its youth, the wine displays magnificent aromas of violet, iris, and red and black fruits — raspberry, blackcurrant, cherry — with vibrant freshness. With age, notes of black truffle, liquorice, chocolate, and leather enrich the aromatic palette. The palate is creamy, with great length and a fresh finish that tightens the wine. Never the most powerful Pomerol, La Conseillante is arguably one of the most harmonious and refined, capable of ageing admirably for 25 to 30 years.

Le vigneron

Since 2015, Marielle Cazaux has been managing director of Château La Conseillante. A graduate engineer from Bordeaux's ENITA specialising in viticulture and oenology, and a qualified oenologist from the University of Bordeaux, she began her career in 2004 as a technical manager, gaining solid experience on both banks of Bordeaux before joining Château Petit-Village in Pomerol. At La Conseillante, she oversees all work in the vineyard and cellar, estate management, and wine marketing, working closely with co-managers Bertrand and Jean-Valmy Nicolas. Marielle embodies a demanding and perfectionist approach, with a "less is more" mindset focused on craftsmanship and precision: plot-by-plot vinifications, rigorous selection, attention to every detail. She has marked the estate with a series of exceptional vintages since her arrival — 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024 — placing La Conseillante at the summit of the appellation. She is assisted by Michel Rolland, consultant oenologist since 2013, and Patrick Argutti, cellar master since 2001. Together, they compose each year's blend, seeking to reveal the aromatic intensity and creamy texture that define the soul of La Conseillante.
