Gilles de Courcel put the perfectionist Yves Confuron in charge of production. By "importing" the techniques of the Côte de Nuits to Pommard (such as vatting and whole bunch fermentation), he succeeded in producing the most immediately seductive Pommards, and among the most accomplished. Thanks to his Rugiens and his Grand Clos des Epenots, Michel Bettane calls this estate "the Romanée Conti of the Côte de Beaune"... In all simplicity!

Domaine de Courcel is a family-owned estate in Pommard on the Côte de Beaune, held by the same family for four centuries. Spanning 10.5 hectares, with 75% classified as Premier Cru, the domaine produces exclusively Pinot Noir wines from prestigious climats: the monopole Grand Clos des Épenots, Les Rugiens, Les Frémiers, and Les Croix Noires. Managed by Anne Bommelaer and Marie de Courcel, with the support of Pierre Clair since 2025, this domaine embodies the excellence and depth of Pommard's terroir.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Domaine de Courcel traces back to the 17th century, when the de Courcel family established itself in Pommard on the hillsides of the Côte de Beaune. Since its foundation four hundred years ago, the estate has remained in the hands of direct descendants of the founders — an exceptional case of family continuity in the Burgundian vineyard. Over the centuries, the domaine has assembled a unique collection of parcels among the most prestigious climats of Pommard, including the Grand Clos des Épenots, a near five-hectare monopole that forms the beating heart of the property. Today, the estate is managed by Anne Bommelaer and Marie de Courcel, along with their children Constance de Leusse and Édouard de Courcel, representing the thirteenth generation to carry forward this legacy. Since 2025, Pierre Clair, a specialist in organic and biodynamic viticulture, has been supporting the family as estate manager.

Le terroir

The 10.5 hectares of Domaine de Courcel lie exclusively within the commune of Pommard, spread between the northern side of the village, towards Beaune, and the southern slopes, towards Volnay. The vineyard rests on clay-limestone soils rich in iron, with varying depth — from 30 to 40 centimetres on Les Vaumuriens, to 80 centimetres on Les Croix Noires — which impart the tannic structure and depth characteristic of the appellation. The jewel of the estate is the Grand Clos des Épenots, a 4.89-hectare monopole located north of Pommard, with full eastern exposure, on brown soils strewn with limestone rocks that act as a natural filter. The vines, averaging forty to sixty years old, are ploughed, de-budded in spring, and green-harvested in August to maintain yields around 25 hectolitres per hectare. The domaine practises non-certified organic viticulture, with rigorous respect for natural balances and a soil-working approach that encourages deep rooting.

Les vins

Domaine de Courcel produces seven different cuvées, all from Pommard and exclusively in Pinot Noir, with the exception of a micro-production of Bourgogne Chardonnay (0.5 hectare). The range centres on a Bourgogne Rouge (1 hectare), the Pommard Village Les Vaumuriens (1.44 hectares), and above all four Premiers Crus representing nearly 75% of the surface: Les Frémiers (0.79 hectares), Les Croix Noires (0.58 hectares), Les Rugiens (1.07 hectares), and the flagship of the estate, the Grand Clos des Épenots (4.89 hectares). Vinified in open vats with a significant proportion of whole bunches, the wines undergo long maceration at low temperature followed by 21 to 23 months' ageing in oak barrels, one-third renewed each year. The domaine's style is immediately recognisable: wines of concentration and depth, with powerful yet silky tannins, aromas of red and black fruits, toasted bread, and refined minerality. These are classic vins de garde that demand patience but amply reward the wait.

Domaine de Courcel is today managed by Anne Bommelaer and Marie de Courcel, alongside their children Constance de Leusse and Édouard de Courcel, who together carry forward the family legacy with rigour and passion. Since 2025, Pierre Clair, estate manager, brings to the domaine his invaluable expertise in organic and biodynamic viticulture, acquired over twenty-one years of experience on exceptional terroirs in Burgundy. This collegial direction combines the long-term vision of a family rooted for four centuries in the village of Pommard with the technical mastery of a recognised professional, in a shared commitment to the purest and deepest expression of terroir. Production never exceeds 30,000 bottles per year, distributed worldwide, testament to uncompromising standards in the service of excellence.
