Acquired in 1934 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the vineyard was successively called Mouton d'Armailhac, Mouton Baron Philippe, Mouton Baronne Philippe before regaining its original name in 1989: Armailhac. Less and less light, Armailhac has recently gained in depth, power and elegance.

Château d'Armailhac, Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, spans 80 hectares in the Pauillac appellation. Owned by the Rothschild family since 1933, this estate neighbouring Mouton Rothschild produces a Cabernet Sauvignon-driven wine with a notable proportion of Cabernet Franc, one of its defining characteristics. Under the direction of Lucie Lauilhé since 2021, the château combines elegant classicism and controlled power, typical of great Left Bank Bordeaux.

L'histoire du domaine

The first traces of the vineyard date back to the 14th century, on land that was then part of the Seigneurie de Mouton. The estate's modern history begins in 1680, when brothers Dominique and Guilhem Armailhacq acquired parcels in Pauillac. By the mid-18th century, the wine was sold under the name Mouton d'Armailhacq, and the property built a solid reputation under Armand d'Armailhacq in the 19th century, a pioneer who introduced and promoted Cabernet Sauvignon in the region. In 1855, the estate was classified as a Fifth Growth. The young Baron Philippe de Rothschild became a minority shareholder in 1931, then acquired full ownership in 1933 — the year his daughter Baroness Philippine was born. The château's name changed several times: Mouton Baron Philippe from 1934, then Mouton Baronne Philippe in 1975 in tribute to Baroness Pauline, the Baron's second wife. In 1989, Baroness Philippine decided to restore its original identity by renaming it Château d'Armailhac. Since 2014, the estate has belonged to Philippine's three children — Camille and Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild — who continue the family's quest for excellence. In 2021, a new state-of-the-art winery was inaugurated, marking a new chapter in the history of this emblematic property.

Le terroir

The Château d'Armailhac vineyard spans 80 hectares in the northern part of the Pauillac commune, adjacent to Château Mouton Rothschild to the north. It comprises three groups of parcels spread across four gravel banks, offering all the diversity typical of the appellation. The Plateau des Levantines and Plateau de l'Obélisque, composed of light, very deep gravel resting on clay-limestone subsoil, constitute ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc; the Plateau de Pibran, with its deep gravel on clay-limestone subsoil, brings finesse and elegance; the Croupe de Béhéré, with lighter gravel descending to three metres depth, hosts Merlot and Petit Verdot. The average age of the vineyard is 40 years, with 20% of parcels planted in 1890. The varietal composition comprises 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The high proportion of Cabernet Franc, with vines averaging 60 years, is unusual for a Médoc vineyard and constitutes one of the estate's signatures. The viticultural philosophy is based on a respectful approach to terroir: sustainable viticulture, massal selection, controlled cover crops, organic manure. Since 2021, ultra-modern technical facilities incorporate environmentally responsible design, with energy self-sufficiency thanks to solar panels.

Les vins

The wine of Château d'Armailhac embodies the classic expression of the Pauillac appellation: a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in proportions varying according to vintage. The relatively high proportion of Cabernet Franc — from old vines averaging 60 years — constitutes a distinctive signature of the estate and brings floral character and salinity to the wine. The style is defined by an elegant classicism discernible whatever the vintage: tannic structure both robust and refined, complex aromatic development with notes of intense black fruits, cassis, cedar, pencil lead, tobacco and graphite, accompanied by spicy touches. Parcel-based vinification takes place in an ultra-modern winery inaugurated in 2021, equipped with fifty temperature-controlled vats of different capacities. Ageing occurs in French oak barrels for 18 months, with 50% new wood. These wines combine power and accessibility: they can be enjoyed young whilst possessing remarkable ageing potential of 20 to 30 years. Recent vintages 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022 mark an impressive qualitative leap, revealing new depth, intensity and fullness.

Le vigneron

Lucie Lauilhé took over as director of Château d'Armailhac in 2021, succeeding Jean-Paul Polaert who had led the property for nearly twenty years. Young yet already possessing solid experience, trained at Montpellier SupAgro, Lucie has rare expertise in both vineyard and winery, and has specialised throughout her career in the link between soils and wines. She now leads a dedicated team including Cédric Marc, cellar master, and Mathieu Maudet, vineyard manager, under the coordination of Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy, Head winemaker overseeing all three of the family's Pauillac properties (Mouton Rothschild, Clerc Milon and d'Armailhac). With Lucie's arrival, a new era opens for the estate: armed with a precise and rigorous approach, she conducts meticulous parcel-based vineyard management, deepens understanding of the terroirs — notably the high proportion of clay present in the soils — and takes full advantage of the new facilities to refine vinification and ageing. Her work translates from her very first vintages into a remarkable rise in intensity, purity and depth, taking Château d'Armailhac to an unprecedented qualitative level.
