Maison Vincent Girardin, based in Meursault in Burgundy, stands as one of the leading references of the Côte de Beaune. Founded in 1980 by Vincent Girardin and led since 2012 by oenologist Éric Germain, the estate produces an extensive range of wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, spanning nine villages from regional appellations to Grands Crus such as Corton-Charlemagne, Bâtard-Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet. Renowned for the magnificent purity of its whites and the finesse of its reds, the house was named Best Négociant of the Year 2023 by La Revue du Vin de France.

L'histoire du domaine

The story of Maison Vincent Girardin begins in 1980, when Vincent Girardin, just 19 years old and descended from a line of Santenay winegrowers dating back to the 17th century, decided to forge his own path with two hectares of vines inherited from his parents. Very quickly, the exceptional quality of his wines enabled him to expand his activity, focusing primarily on the great whites and reds of the Côte de Beaune. In 1992, he created his négociant business, developing an approach that was innovative for Burgundy at the time: purchasing grapes from growers who shared the same philosophy and standards of excellence. The decisive turning point came in the early 2000s with the arrival of Éric Germain as winemaker: together, they decided to concentrate on what matters most — revealing the authentic expression of Burgundy's great terroirs, giving birth to a style of purity now recognised worldwide. In 2012, Vincent Girardin sold his business to Jean-Pierre Nié, president of the Compagnie des Vins d'Autrefois in Beaune, who retained the loyal team to perpetuate excellence. Since then, the house has rebuilt 17 hectares of owned vineyards in the Côte de Beaune, farmed biodynamically, and continues to purchase the equivalent of 15 hectares of grapes each year, producing around 450,000 bottles annually.

Le terroir

Based in Meursault, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, Maison Vincent Girardin draws upon a viticultural estate of 17 hectares of owned vineyards, spread across the region's finest terroirs, supplemented by carefully selected purchased grapes. The range spans nine emblematic villages — Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin, Santenay, Savigny-lès-Beaune, Aloxe-Corton, Volnay and Pommard — and extends to the Côte de Nuits with Grands Crus such as Charmes-Chambertin and Clos de Vougeot. The viticultural philosophy rests on demanding sustainable agriculture principles: the estate's vineyards are farmed using uncertified biodynamic methods, without herbicides or insecticides, with deep ploughing and exclusive use of natural composts from Burgundian farms. Harvests are manual with double sorting, in the vineyard and at the winery. In the cellar, the approach is as natural as possible: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, extended ageing on fine lees in French oak barrels from the finest forests, with measured use of new wood, and respect for the lunar calendar for all vinification and bottling stages. This rigorous approach reveals the profound identity of each Burgundian climat.

Les vins

The range of Maison Vincent Girardin embraces the entire Burgundian hierarchy, from regional appellations Bourgogne Chardonnay Cuvée Saint-Vincent and Bourgogne Pinot Noir Cuvée Saint-Vincent to five white Grands Crus — Corton-Charlemagne, Corton-Perrières, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet — as well as dozens of Premiers Crus and Villages wines. The whites, which dominate production, are distinguished by remarkable aromatic purity, a balance between richness and freshness, smoothness and liveliness, with notes of citrus, white flowers, almond and toasted hazelnut, underscored by fine minerality. The reds, which have gained considerably in depth and complexity since Éric Germain's arrival, offer velvety tannins, silky texture, bright fruit and characteristic elegance. Among the emblematic cuvées are Meursault Vieilles Vignes, Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes-Dessus, Puligny-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes, Volnay Vieilles Vignes and Pommard Vieilles Vignes. The Girardin style favours authentic terroir expression and ageing potential, without seeking immediate flattery, embodying the great Burgundian classicism.

Le vigneron

Éric Germain embodies the winemaking soul of Maison Vincent Girardin for over twenty years. A native of Meursault and from a winemaking family — his brother Jean-François heads the renowned Domaine Henri Germain — Éric built his expertise from 1981 at the family estate, before working as a consulting oenologist with over forty Burgundian estates from 1999 to 2002, including the prestigious Domaine Roumier, Roulot and David Duband. Joining Vincent Girardin in 2002 to assist the founder, he became the driving force in 2012 when the house changed hands, taking the helm as CEO and winemaker. With the soul of a farmer and meticulous attention to precise work, Éric Germain follows in the house's tradition: crafting quality wines that reveal the profound identity of each terroir. Under his leadership, the house has evolved towards a purity of style now acclaimed by all professionals, with whites achieving magnificent purity and reds gaining in depth, tannin quality and complexity. In 2023, his work was crowned with the 1st prize for best négociant of the year by La Revue du Vin de France. "I am one of the most fulfilled men in Burgundy," he confides with sincerity, embodying the passion and excellence of this great Burgundian house.
