Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, a Fifth Classified Growth in 1855, stands as one of the benchmark estates of the Pauillac appellation. Owned by the Borie family since 1978, this 90-hectare property with 60 hectares under vine rests on remarkably preserved deep gravel terroir. Under François-Xavier Borie's guidance, the vineyard planted with 75% Cabernet Sauvignon produces wines of exemplary consistency, classical and structured, renowned for their aging potential and pure expression of the Médoc.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste reaches deep into the centuries — the first vine plantings date back to the 16th century, when the estate belonged to the Guiraud family. The name itself evokes geography and lineage: 'Grand-Puy' designates the gravel plateau dominating the village of Pauillac — the term 'puy' meaning small hillock in old French, already mentioned in medieval documents — while 'Lacoste' recalls the family who owned it in the 19th century, after one of the daughters of the Saint-Guirons line married François Lacoste. It was Pierre-Frédéric Lacoste who rebuilt the château in 1855, the very year the estate obtained the rank of Fifth Classified Growth, thus officialising a reputation already well established since 1776. In 1932, Raymond Dupin, a Bordeaux négociant and celebrated gastronome, purchased the property and made it a renowned place of life and hospitality until 1978, when Jean-Eugène Borie acquired the estate and immediately installed his son François-Xavier at the helm, with the 1979 vintage as his first act. Since then, three generations of Bories have elevated Grand-Puy-Lacoste to the rank of the great classics of the Médoc.

Le terroir

The vineyard of Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste forms an ensemble of rare coherence: 60 hectares planted in a single continuous block around the château, on the Grand-Puy plateau that dominates Pauillac to the west. The parcels have not changed since the 1855 classification — a precious singularity in the Médoc. The terroir rests on deep Günzian gravel mixed with pebbles, stones and sand, over a limestone subsoil that ensures drainage and thermal regulation. The grape varieties strongly favour Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), complemented by Merlot (20%) and Cabernet Franc (5%), with a high planting density of 10,000 vines per hectare and an average age of 38 years. Since 1978, the Borie family has systematically replanted to balance young and old vines. Viticulture is sustainable, certified High Environmental Value level 3: no insecticides for over ten years, mechanical soil ploughing, manual harvesting by the same Spanish team for over fifty years, double sorting of clusters before and after destemming. Ageing takes place in 70-75% new French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months, with increasingly precise vinification thanks to 43 temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and the new gravity-fed cellar inaugurated with the 2025 vintage.

Les vins

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste produces two wines: the eponymous grand vin and Lacoste-Borie, the second wine crafted since the 1982 vintage, now also designated as Vignes du Parc to mark its origin from distinct parcels west of the stream. The grand vin, dominated each year by Cabernet Sauvignon (75 to 79% depending on vintages), embodies the archetype of classical Pauillac: structured wines, austere in their youth, with deep colour and pure aromas of blackcurrant, violet, graphite, cedar and tobacco. The fine, powdery tannins support a dense structure and vibrant acidity that confer considerable ageing potential — twenty to forty years depending on vintages. The house style favours precision, balance and terroir expression over ostentatious power. Grand-Puy-Lacoste is regularly cited among the Fifth Growths that outperform their rank, with exemplary qualitative consistency praised by international critics.

Le vigneron

François-Xavier Borie has been running Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste since 1979, after his father Jean-Eugène acquired the estate in 1978 and immediately entrusted him with the reins. Trained in commerce and oenology, François-Xavier grew up in the wine world — his family also owns the Second Classified Growth Château Ducru-Beaucaillou in Saint-Julien. Demanding, rigorous and visionary, he has orchestrated a true renaissance of Grand-Puy-Lacoste: complete renovation of the vineyard, modernisation of winemaking facilities (new vat room in 1981, barrel cellar in 2003, vat room expansion in 2016 and 2018, new gravity-fed cellar in 2024-2025), whilst preserving the soul of the estate and its classical style. He lives at the château with his wife Marie-Hélène, a rare singularity in the modern Médoc. His daughter Émeline Borie, also trained in the profession, has joined the family venture and now ensures the day-to-day management of the estate, embodying the continuity of a demanding vision and a deep attachment to the terroir. François-Xavier Borie works alongside Eric Boissenot, one of Bordeaux's most respected consulting oenologists.
