Champagne Jacquesson, founded in 1798 in Châlons-sur-Marne, is one of the oldest independent Champagne houses. Based in Dizy, the estate cultivates 36 hectares classified as Grand Cru and Premier Cru (Aÿ, Avize, Oiry, Dizy, Hautvillers). The house is globally renowned for its revolutionary Série 700, a numbered cuvée launched in 2000 that prioritises vintage expression over house style consistency. Certified organic since 2010, Jacquesson embodies a demanding Champagne vision grounded in terroir, precision, and respect for the singularity of each harvest.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Jacquesson begins in 1798, when Claude and Memmie Jacquesson established the house in Châlons-sur-Marne — one of the oldest in the region. The estate rapidly rose to fame: Napoleon Bonaparte is said to have made it his favourite Champagne, bestowing upon the house a gold medal in 1810 for "the beauty and richness of its cellars". In the 19th century, under the visionary leadership of Adolphe Jacquesson, the house experienced its golden age. In 1844, he revolutionised the Champagne trade by patenting the muselet, the wire cage still used today to secure the cork. He also contributed to transforming Champagne production techniques alongside the famous Jules Guyot. Under his direction, a certain Johann Joseph Krug served as cellar master before founding his eponymous house in 1843. Following a period of decline after Adolphe Jacquesson's death, the house changed hands several times until 1974, when Jean Chiquet acquired it and relocated it to Dizy. His sons Laurent and Jean-Hervé took over in 1988 and infused new energy for nearly 35 years, placing precision and terroir at the heart of their approach. In 2022, Artémis Domaines, the wine division of the Pinault family, acquired the house, opening a new chapter under the management of Jean Garandeau while preserving the pioneering spirit that has driven Jacquesson for over two centuries.

Le terroir

The Jacquesson vineyard extends over 36 hectares spread across the Grand Cru villages of Aÿ, Avize and Oiry, and the Premier Cru villages of Dizy, Hautvillers and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Each terroir reveals a unique expression: the omnipresent chalk — sometimes at the surface, sometimes deeper — shapes the mineral identity of the wines. Since 2010, the estate's vineyards have been certified organic. Meticulous and respectful work is carried out in the vineyard, with practices promoting low yields and optimal grape ripeness: where Champagne permits approximately 11,000 bottles per hectare, Jacquesson produces only around 7,000. In the cellar, attention to detail remains the cardinal principle: vertical pressing is carried out with the utmost gentleness, wines are made exclusively from the juice of the first pressings, vinification and ageing on lees in large oak casks, without fining or filtration. Fermentations occur spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, in an approach that respects the soil and the plant. The dosage, always very low (usually 2 to 5 grams per litre), aims to reveal the finesse and transparency of the wines without masking anything.

Les vins

The Jacquesson range is built on two emblematic pillars. The first is the celebrated Série 700, launched with Cuvée 728 based on the 2000 vintage: each number corresponds to a base vintage, complemented by 30 to 40% reserve wines from previous 700 cuvées. This revolutionary approach, which prioritises vintage expression over house style consistency, has made these numbered cuvées (now Cuvée 748) essential references in Champagne. A Dégorgement Tardif programme allows part of each Série 700 to be released after extended lees ageing (up to 9 years), revealing exceptional aromatic complexity and depth. The second pillar comprises the single-vineyard cuvées — Avize Champ Caïn, Dizy Corne Bautray, Aÿ Vauzelle Terme and Dizy Terres Rouges — crafted in tiny quantities from the finest parcels, true expressions of place and testimonies to the diversity of Champagne terroirs. The Jacquesson style is characterised by mineral elegance, vibrant tension, vinification in oak casks that brings texture and complexity, and minimal dosage that allows the purity of fruit and terroir to shine through.

Le vigneron

Since September 2022, Champagne Jacquesson has been led by Jean Garandeau, appointed managing director following the acquisition of the house by Artémis Domaines, the wine division of the Pinault family. A veteran of the luxury wine world, Jean Garandeau previously served as sales and marketing director at Artémis Domaines and notably worked at Krug — a fitting historical parallel given the link between the two houses. Born in Burgundy to a Burgundian mother and a Bordeaux father, he grew up in a culture where fine wine was a serious family pursuit. By his side, two essential figures perpetuate the soul of the house: Yann Le Gall, cellar master present since 2010, who oversees the winemaking with unwavering consistency, and Mathilde Prier, vineyard manager who took responsibility for the vineyards in 2020 and conducts the viticultural work with rigour and sensitivity. Jean Garandeau's philosophy is one of continuity and respect: "We are starting at a very high level, but we can fine-tune". He remains in close contact with Jean-Hervé Chiquet, who still sits on the board of directors, to preserve the vision and cult status of this pioneering house among enthusiasts worldwide.
