Château Latour, Premier Grand Cru Classé 1855, embodies the excellence of the Pauillac appellation. Located at the southernmost tip of the commune, just a few hundred metres from the Gironde estuary, this 78-hectare estate produces one of the most powerful and consistent wines in the Médoc. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (around 90%), the Grand Vin is sourced exclusively from l'Enclos, a mythical 47-hectare parcel renowned as one of Bordeaux's finest terroirs. Owned by François Pinault since 1993, Château Latour has been certified organic since 2018 and withdrew from the en primeur system with the 2012 vintage.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Château Latour dates back to 1331, when Gaucelme de Castillon was granted permission to erect a fortified tower — the Tour de Saint-Maubert — to watch over the Gironde estuary during the Hundred Years' War. The site's viticultural calling is documented from the 16th century onwards, with Montaigne already mentioning the wine of Latour in his Essays. At the end of the 17th century, the estate entered the Ségur family through marriage: Alexandre de Ségur wed Marie-Thérèse de Clauzel and added Château Lafite to his holdings in 1716. His son Nicolas-Alexandre, nicknamed the "Prince of Vines," expanded the family empire by acquiring Mouton and Calon-Ségur, making Latour one of the greatest properties in the Médoc. The French Revolution temporarily fragmented the estate, which was not reassembled until 1841 with the creation of the Société Civile de Château Latour in 1842. Consecrated as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the château left the Ségur family in 1963, purchased by the British group Pearson, which undertook extensive modernisation. In 1993, François Pinault acquired all shares through his holding company Artémis, ushering in a new era defined by absolute exigence and conversion to organic farming.

Le terroir

Château Latour is located at the far south-eastern tip of the Pauillac appellation, on the border with Saint-Julien, just 300 metres from the Gironde estuary. The 78-hectare vineyard is planted to 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The heart of the estate is l'Enclos, a historic 47-hectare parcel whose layout has remained virtually unchanged since 1794, and which produces the Grand Vin exclusively. This exceptional terroir rests on deep gravel ridges (4 to 5 metres) mixed with clay subsoil, offering natural drainage and ideal water retention capacity. The proximity of the estuary moderates temperature variations and protects the vineyard from spring frosts. Since 2008, the estate has reintroduced horse-drawn ploughing and undertaken a progressive conversion to organic and biodynamic farming: the entire vineyard has been certified organic since 2018, and over 50% of l'Enclos is farmed biodynamically. No herbicides are used, and the estate produces its own compost from nettles, crushed vine shoots and dogwood.

Les vins

Château Latour produces three exceptional red wines. The Grand Vin de Château Latour, sourced exclusively from the old vines of l'Enclos (average age 60 years), is blended from over 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged 18 to 20 months in 100% new barrels from the Allier and Nièvre forests. A wine of monumental power, firm tannic structure and rare concentration, it can age favourably for several decades, developing a complex bouquet combining black fruits, graphite, cedar and deep minerality. Les Forts de Latour, created in 1966, comes from parcels surrounding l'Enclos and vines acquired over time; blended with 25 to 30% Merlot and aged in 50 to 60% new oak, this second wine possesses the stature of a Grand Cru Classé in its own right. Finally, Le Pauillac de Château Latour, produced regularly since 1990, comes from young vines and outlying parcels; with around 45% Merlot and ageing in only 20% new barrels, it offers an elegant and approachable introduction to the house style. Since 2012, Château Latour no longer sells its wines en primeur, keeping stocks in its cellars until optimal maturity.

Le vigneron

Since 1995, Frédéric Engerer has led Château Latour with uncompromising rigour and exacting standards. Appointed president of the estate after serving as managing director, this discreet and perfectionist figure has taken the property to unparalleled qualitative heights, with the unwavering support of François Pinault, owner since 1993. Under his leadership, the estate has undertaken a quiet revolution: full conversion to certified organic farming in 2018, biodynamic commitment on over half of l'Enclos, reintroduction of horse-drawn ploughing, and the revolutionary decision to withdraw from the en primeur system in 2012 to market wines only at optimal maturity. Frédéric Engerer also oversaw the complete renovation of the cellars and winemaking facilities from 1999 onwards, enabling even greater precision and control in crafting the wines. Alongside him, Hélène Génin, estate director, oversees the day-to-day operational management of the property. Together, they embody a long-term vision that makes Château Latour the very symbol of Bordeaux excellence and the pursuit of absolute perfection.
