Poonawatta is a boutique wine estate located in Eden Valley, South Australia, renowned for its ancestor Shiraz vines planted in 1880. Owned by Andrew and Michelle Holt, who established the wine brand in 2002, the estate produces small-volume, single-vineyard wines, including the prestigious The 1880 Shiraz from vines over 140 years old, alongside exceptional Riesling. Awarded Five Stars by James Halliday since 2008, Poonawatta embodies the excellence of Australian high-altitude viticulture.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Poonawatta begins in 1880, when European settler Ferdinand Vorwerk planted the first Shiraz vineyard in Flaxman Valley, in the heart of Eden Valley. The property, whose name means 'good country' in the language of the Peramangk, the indigenous custodians of the region, changed hands in 1891 with the arrival of Colonel John Temple, a British Army officer stationed in India at a town called Poona — a remarkable coincidence with the estate's name. In 1922, part of the property was carved off as part of the WWI soldier repatriation programme. In 1966, Sue and John Holt purchased Poonawatta, and in 1971, through their vision, they successfully reacquired the 1880 vineyard block that had been separated from the estate. For decades, the Holts patiently restored the neglected vineyard, filling gaps through layering. In 2002, their son Andrew and his wife Michelle established the Poonawatta wine brand, marking the beginning of a new era. Today, the fifth and sixth generations of descendants continue the Eden Valley viticultural legacy.

Le terroir

Located in Flaxman Valley within the Eden Valley region, Poonawatta benefits from an altitude ranging between 400 and 600 metres, offering a markedly cooler climate than neighbouring Barossa Valley. Harvest often occurs four weeks later than in Barossa, allowing for slow, gradual ripening that imparts finesse and elegance to the wines. The ancestor 1880 vineyard, covering approximately 0.8 hectares, sits on deep clay loam soils adjacent to a watercourse, ensuring balance for the old vines even during drought. The particularly cool site cools down quickly after hot summer days. The estate also includes two hectares of Riesling planted in 1972 on poor, sandy soils on a north-east facing slope, as well as a Shiraz vineyard established between 1978 and 1982 from cuttings taken from the 1880 vines, and a Grenache vineyard planted in 2019. The viticultural approach prioritises soil regeneration, biodiversity and sustainable practices as part of the Wildlife for Wine project.

Les vins

The Poonawatta range is structured around two collections: estate wines from single vineyards, and regional wines crafted from grapes selected from other Eden Valley growers. The estate's flagship is The 1880 Shiraz, an Ancestor wine ranked among Australia's oldest producing vineyards, with silky tannins and remarkable balance, offering exceptional cellaring potential. In outstanding vintages, a Centenarian Single Barrel Shiraz is also produced. The Cuttings Shiraz, from vines propagated from the original 1880 block, delivers even lower yields and concentrated intensity. The Eden Riesling, from the 1972 vineyard, expresses crystalline purity with lime aromas and vibrant minerality. The range also includes a Grenache, a Cabernet Sauvignon, and Four Corners regional cuvées celebrating the diversity of Eden Valley terroirs. Annual production: approximately 1,200 to 1,500 cases.

Le vigneron

Andrew Holt is the viticulturist and winemaker at Poonawatta, personally overseeing the vineyards and all winemaking decisions. Passionate and perfectionist, he embodies an artisanal approach to wine, where each vintage becomes a new lesson from the old vines which, as he says, 'always teach something new'. A nature photographer in his spare time, Andrew possesses an immense heart and deep commitment to the Eden Valley viticultural community. Since 2002, he has worked closely with winemaker Harry Mantzarapis at Rolf Binder Wines, where Poonawatta leases tanks for winemaking. Alongside him, Michelle Holt manages the commercial and operational aspects of the estate on a daily basis, bringing her expertise and deep knowledge of the wines during tastings at the cellar door. Together, Andrew and Michelle continue a six-generation family legacy in Eden Valley, guided by a simple philosophy: respect the history of those who came before and protect the land for future generations.
