Château Quinault L'Enclos is a 19-hectare Saint-Émilion Grand Cru estate located in the heart of Libourne, on sandy gravel soils. Acquired in 2008 by Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère, owners of Château Cheval Blanc, the domaine has since been managed by Cheval Blanc's technical team, with certified organic viticulture since 2012. The blend comprises Merlot (65%), Cabernet Sauvignon (21%) and Cabernet Franc (14%), with a small percentage of Malbec introduced from 2024. Classified as Grand Cru in 2012, Quinault L'Enclos embodies a style of precision, freshness and minerality — a resolutely modern expression of Right Bank Bordeaux.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Château Quinault L'Enclos dates back to the 17th century, when vines were already cultivated on this singular walled site in Libourne — an enclosure that still stands today. Much of the estate's past remains obscure until 1930, when it was purchased by wine merchant Baptiste Mons — a period during which the property lost 8 hectares, expropriated for a cemetery. In 1948, Quinault passed to Henri Maleret, son-in-law of Baptiste Mons, who ran the estate until the 1990s. A decisive chapter opened in 1997 when Dr. Alain Raynaud, former president of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux, acquired the domaine with his wife Françoise and undertook a sweeping transformation — renovating the cellars, replanting part of the vineyard, and abandoning mechanical harvesting in favour of hand picking. Under his stewardship, Quinault L'Enclos gained growing critical acclaim. In September 2008, Bernard Arnault (LVMH) and Baron Albert Frère purchased the estate, adding it to their Saint-Émilion portfolio alongside Château Cheval Blanc. Since then, Quinault L'Enclos has been managed with the same rigour as Cheval Blanc, and in 2012 it was elevated to the classification of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé — a distinction it voluntarily withdrew from in 2022, following Cheval Blanc's example.

Le terroir

Château Quinault L'Enclos extends over 19 hectares in the heart of the city of Libourne, within a walled enclosure that bears witness to a bygone era when urban vineyards were still common in the Bordeaux region. This rare geographical singularity makes it one of the last urban vineyards in Saint-Émilion. Until 1973, the estate belonged to the satellite appellation Sables-Saint-Émilion, before its integration into Saint-Émilion proper. The terroir is composed of light sandy gravels, with a subsoil of clay and sand — a geological mosaic that imparts finesse, minerality and freshness to the wine. The vineyard is planted in a single parcel, an unusual feature for a property of this size on the Right Bank. Its proximity to the Dordogne River creates a warmer microclimate than in most other Saint-Émilion estates, allowing for early harvests. Since 2008, the Cheval Blanc team has undertaken a comprehensive restructuring of the vineyard: conversion to certified organic farming in 2012, replanting of a large portion of the parcels with massal selection from Cheval Blanc, deep soil work to encourage rooting. This approach aims to reveal with sincerity and precision the potential of this exceptional urban terroir.

Les vins

The range at Château Quinault L'Enclos is based on a varietal composition characteristic of the Bordeaux Right Bank, with a dominance of Merlot (65% of the current plantings), complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (21%) and Cabernet Franc (14%). A significant evolution occurs from the 2024 vintage, with the introduction of a small percentage of Malbec into the blend — a sign of the spirit of experimentation that drives the Cheval Blanc team. The vineyard includes old parcels, some planted as early as 1934, others after the 1956 frost, lending depth and complexity to the wines. Vinification takes place in wooden vats, malolactic fermentation in barrels, and ageing lasts approximately 18 months, with around 50% new oak and, in recent vintages, the introduction of foudres to limit oak influence and favour fruit expression. The style of Quinault L'Enclos has evolved profoundly since 2008: whereas the wine was once round, ripe and opulent under the Raynaud era, it is now distinguished by vibrant freshness, pulsing minerality and chiselled tension — a resolutely elegant profile, capable of pleasing when young whilst offering fine ageing potential of 15 to 20 years.

Le vigneron

Since July 2023, Pierre-Olivier Clouet has led Château Cheval Blanc and, by extension, Château Quinault L'Enclos, as managing director. Personally recruited by Pierre Lurton as an intern in 2004, he rose through the ranks at the estate, serving as technical director from 2008 — the very year Quinault L'Enclos was acquired by Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère. Pierre-Olivier Clouet embodies a vision deeply rooted in terroir knowledge: for him, a great winemaker is not one who masters universal techniques, but one who intimately knows the place he cultivates. Under his leadership, Quinault L'Enclos has become a genuine laboratory for the Cheval Blanc team — a space for freedom and experimentation where innovative practices are tested (ageing in foudres, organic conversion, replanting with massal selection) that subsequently inform the work at Cheval Blanc. Demanding, curious and rigorous, Pierre-Olivier Clouet steadfastly pursues the mission launched in 2008: to reveal with sincerity and precision the potential of this exceptional urban terroir, rejecting both over-ripeness and passing trends, to produce timeless wines vibrant with truth.
