Château Rauzan-Ségla, Second Growth in the 1855 Classification, stands as one of Margaux's most distinguished estates. Owned by Chanel since 1994, the property comprises 70 hectares planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Under the direction of Nicolas Audebert since 2015, Rauzan-Ségla crafts wines of rare elegance, combining refinement, depth and exceptional ageing potential. Certified organic since 2024.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Château Rauzan-Ségla begins in 1661, when Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan acquired the noble house of Gassies in the parish of Margaux. A visionary merchant already managing Château Margaux and Château Latour, he laid the foundations of an estate that would rapidly gain renown. In the 18th century, the property was divided: Catherine de Rauzan, wife of Baron Pierre-Louis de Ségla from 1785, gave the estate the name it still bears today after taking charge in 1816. The wine captivated the most illustrious figures — Thomas Jefferson himself, visiting Bordeaux in 1787, ordered several cases for his personal use and for George Washington. The 1855 Classification consecrated Rauzan-Ségla as a Second Growth. After belonging to the Durand-Dassier family and then to Frédéric Cruse — who built the current château in 1903 — the property went through contrasting periods. In 1994, the Wertheimer family, owners of Chanel, acquired the estate and launched a complete renaissance: renovation of the vineyard, cellars and château entrusted to architect Peter Marino. Since then, the estate has continued its ascent towards excellence.

Le terroir

The vineyard of Château Rauzan-Ségla extends over 70 hectares in the heart of the Margaux appellation, forming a veritable mosaic of terroirs near the Gironde estuary. The main part of the estate unfolds around the château, with satellite parcels scattered throughout the appellation. The Margaux subsoil reveals itself here in all its diversity: deep gravels resting on clay, fine gravels, and clay-limestone soils form a geological millefeuille of remarkable complexity — Nicolas Audebert speaks of up to twenty-one different soil types on the property. These poor, perfectly drained soils naturally force the vine to drive its roots deep. The plantings, finely adapted to this diversity, comprise 62% Cabernet Sauvignon on warm gravels, 36% Merlot on more clayey zones, complemented by 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The proximity to the estuary plays an essential role in thermal regulation of the vineyard. Since 2019, the entire estate has been farmed organically — certified in 2024 — with meticulous soil work and a rigorous parcel-by-parcel approach.

Les vins

The range at Château Rauzan-Ségla centres on two wines. The grand vin, Château Rauzan-Ségla, embodies the quintessence of Margaux: an immediately recognisable style wedded to sovereign elegance. A blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (approximately 63%), complemented by Merlot (34%), Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc in touches, it is aged 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels with 50 to 60% new wood renewed each year. The wine is distinguished by remarkable finesse, exceptionally silky tannins, vibrant acidity and complex aromatic depth — violet, blackcurrant, cedar, graphite — making it one of the purest expressions of the appellation. The second wine, Ségla, offers a more immediate and appealing approach to the terroir, produced from the estate's satellite vineyards on alluvial terraces. These wines, never massive nor heavy, unfold lengthwise with tension and considerable ageing potential. The 2015 and 2016 vintages are considered the finest ever produced at the estate.

Le vigneron

Nicolas Audebert has directed Château Rauzan-Ségla since 2015, along with Château Canon in Saint-Émilion for the Chanel group. Trained at Moët & Chandon then winemaker at Cheval des Andes in Argentina for LVMH, this young general manager with a cosmopolitan profile has brought renewed vision to the estate: increased precision in vinifications, adaptation of clones to soil types, reorientation of certain parcels, organic conversion. His winemaking philosophy, which he describes as "symphonic", prioritises the sincere expression of terroir over personal signature. Alongside him, François Baudoux, technical director, embodies the estate's viticultural approach: constant observation, humility before nature, adaptability to each vintage. Didier Larue, cellarmaster for over twenty years, ensures with rigour the parcel-by-parcel ageing and vinification in the estate's 35 temperature-controlled tanks. Together, this close-knit team propels Rauzan-Ségla to heights reminiscent of the estate's historic reputation — the one that seduced Thomas Jefferson and made the domaine one of the most admired in Bordeaux.
