Château Sociando-Mallet is a leading estate in the Haut-Médoc, located in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, north of Pauillac. Across 83 hectares of Günz gravel over clay-limestone bedrock, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc yield powerful yet elegant wines. Since 1969, the Gautreau family has elevated this unclassified property to the level of the finest Left Bank estates, with HVE level 3 certification.

L'histoire du domaine

The origins of Sociando-Mallet date back to 1633, when an aristocrat of Basque origin named Sociondo settled in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne. A document from 1750 mentions the vines of Demoiselle Anne de Sossiondo, a name that would become Sociando through spelling evolution. In 1793, the estate was confiscated during the French Revolution and purchased by Jean Lamothe. It took its definitive name in 1831, when Marie-Élisabeth Alaret, owner and niece of Lamothe, married Achille Mallet, a naval officer; following the custom of the time, the estate was renamed Sociando-Mallet. The modern turning point came in 1969, when Jean Gautreau, a Bordeaux broker, discovered the property whilst searching for an estate on behalf of a Belgian client. Captivated by the commanding view over the estuary and the terroir's potential, he acquired it for 250,000 francs. At the time, the vineyard comprised a mere 5 hectares in poor condition, with no proper cellar. Over fifty years, Jean Gautreau methodically expanded the vineyard, renovated the facilities, and raised quality to the point where Sociando-Mallet became a Médoc reference, deliberately refusing any classification. He passed away in November 2019, leaving his daughter Sylvie a wine estate of the highest order.

Le terroir

Château Sociando-Mallet sits atop the Baleyron ridge, ten kilometres north of Pauillac, majestically overlooking the Gironde estuary where the river bends. The estate extends over 120 hectares, of which 83 are planted to vine, on an exceptional terroir of Günz gravel resting on deep clay-limestone bedrock. This geological configuration perfectly regulates the vine's water supply and enables Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen under excellent conditions, whilst Merlot acquires depth and complexity. The plantings comprise 54% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, with vines averaging 35 years of age and a high planting density of 8,300 vines per hectare. The proximity to the estuary ensures a temperate microclimate that shields the vineyard from thermal variations and frost. The estate practises sustainable viticulture certified HVE level 3, with soil ploughing and no green harvesting, allowing nature to regulate yields. Harvesting is entirely manual, in small crates, by a team of 120 pickers. Vinification follows traditional methods with indigenous yeasts, in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats, with malolactic fermentation in tank and ageing for 12 months in 90% new oak barrels, followed by 6 months in vat to homogenise the production.

Les vins

The Sociando-Mallet range unfolds in three distinct expressions of the Baleyron terroir. The grand vin, Château Sociando-Mallet, displays a deep, dark colour with a complex bouquet dominated by black fruits — blackcurrant, blackberry, morello cherry — lifted by a touch of graphite minerality and elegant, well-integrated oak. On the palate, the structure is dense, the tannins frank yet silky, with remarkable freshness and exceptional length. This wine ages gracefully for 25 to 30 years in great vintages. La Demoiselle de Sociando-Mallet, the second wine sourced from younger vines and Merlot-favourable plots (representing approximately 87% of the blend in certain vintages), takes its name from a local dragonfly species. Aged mainly in tank to preserve the freshness and fruitiness of Merlot, it is a light, elegant and approachable wine with supple, generous character that can be enjoyed young. Finally, the exceedingly rare Cuvée Jean Gautreau, created in 1995, results from a selection of the 15 finest barrels out of over 1,500, with a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon than the grand vin. This exceptional parcel cuvée, originally intended for Jean Gautreau's personal consumption, offers uncommon density and complexity, with considerable ageing potential.

Le vigneron

Since 2017, Sylvie Gautreau has led Château Sociando-Mallet, perpetuating the legacy of her father Jean Gautreau, who passed away in 2019. Born in 1967, the only child of Jean and Colette Gautreau, Sylvie grew up at Sociando-Mallet, which was her childhood playground. Schooled by her father, she shares the same passion for the terroir and favours viticultural methods close to nature, respecting the land. Since 2018, she has been supported by François Hugueniot, technical director recruited to accompany the transition and uphold the quality standards that have built the estate's reputation. Together, they conduct technical tastings and blending sessions, whilst continually investing in cellar and vineyard to maintain Sociando-Mallet among the essential references of Bordeaux. The estate now exports to over 33 countries and produces nearly 450,000 bottles per year.
