Domaine de la Taille aux Loups, established in 1989 by Jacky Blot in Montlouis-sur-Loire, has become one of the leading references for Chenin Blanc in the Loire Valley. Now led by Jean-Philippe Blot, the estate cultivates 45 hectares of certified organic vines across the Montlouis and Vouvray appellations, producing a comprehensive range of dry, sparkling and sweet wines of remarkable purity and tension. The iconic Triple Zéro cuvée and single-vineyard crus Clos de Mosny and Clos Michet exemplify the excellence of an estate that has helped elevate Montlouis far beyond the shadow of Vouvray.

L'histoire du domaine

The story of Domaine de la Taille aux Loups begins in 1989, when Jacky Blot settled in Montlouis-sur-Loire after a career as a wine broker during which he travelled extensively through vineyards, particularly Burgundy, whose crus he deeply admired. Together with his wife Joëlle, he acquired 8 hectares of old vines in an appellation then little known, living in the shadow of Vouvray. From the outset, Jacky Blot made the radical choice to vinify exclusively dry wines, using organic farming and Burgundian barrels — revolutionary practices at the time that provoked incomprehension and criticism. Over the decades, the estate expanded to reach 45 hectares across Montlouis and Vouvray, gradually becoming a world reference for Chenin Blanc. In 2002, Jacky Blot extended his activity by acquiring Domaine de la Butte in Bourgueil to cultivate Cabernet Franc. Jacky Blot's passing in May 2023 marked the end of an era: a charismatic and visionary figure, he left an immense legacy, having transformed Montlouis into a first-tier appellation.

Le terroir

The Domaine de la Taille aux Loups vineyard extends over 45 hectares divided between Montlouis-sur-Loire (40 hectares) and Vouvray (5 hectares), on south-facing limestone slopes overlooking the Loire and Cher rivers. The entire vineyard rests on a bedrock of tuffeau limestone, covered according to parcels with clay-flint, silica or rich clays — a geological mosaic that nourishes the diversity and complexity of the cuvées. Clos de Mosny, acquired in 2010, constitutes one of the estate's jewels: 12 hectares in a single block, entirely walled over more than a kilometre and a half, facing due south on terroir mixing sandy clays and flint at the surface before reaching limestone in depth. Certified organic since 2012, the vineyard is ploughed, without chemical fertilisers or insecticides. Yields are deliberately limited to 25-35 hectolitres per hectare. In the cellar, vinifications take place in barrels with indigenous yeasts, without chaptalization or malolactic fermentation, followed by extended ageing on fine lees — a Burgundy-inspired approach that gives the wines their tension, minerality and ageing capacity.

Les vins

The Domaine de la Taille aux Loups range explores every facet of Chenin Blanc, from sparkling to sweet wines, via a palette of dry still whites that form the heart of the estate's identity. The Rémus cuvée, an assemblage of several parcels on Montlouis, represents the archetype of the house style: taut, chiselled, vibrant with acidity and minerality. The single-vineyard cuvées — Clos de Mosny, Clos Michet, Les Hauts de Husseau from Vouvray, Clos de Venise — take terroir expression to its highest level of precision and complexity. In sparkling wines, the legendary Triple Zéro (zero chaptalization, zero liqueur de tirage, zero liqueur d'expédition) has embodied the estate's pioneering vision in natural sparkling wine for 25 years: fine bubbles, crystalline purity, vibrant tension. The sweet and dessert wines, produced only in great vintages, reveal Chenin's capacity when botrytised to achieve voluptuous complexity whilst retaining freshness and balance. The Taille aux Loups style is immediately recognisable: straightness, acid tension, chalky minerality, oak effacement in favour of fruit and terroir, exceptional ageing potential.

Le vigneron

Since Jacky Blot's death in May 2023, Jean-Philippe Blot has been solely running Domaine de la Taille aux Loups as well as Domaine de la Butte in Bourgueil. Unlike his father, Jean-Philippe grew up in the vineyards and developed sharp technical skills there: after completing his viticulture and oenology degree, he returned definitively to the estate in 2006, working hand in hand with Jacky for nearly twenty years. This transmission over the long term allowed for a smooth handover. Jean-Philippe perpetuates his father's legacy with the same rigour — barrel ageing, Triple Zéro, parcel vinifications, refusal of any compromise on purity — whilst bringing his own sensibility to it. Convinced that Chenin is "the world's finest grape variety" and "the best terroir vector", he observes with interest the effects of climate warming which makes the variety even more digestible and complex. Supported by a close-knit technical and viticultural team, Jean-Philippe continues his father's work with determination and humility, ensuring the continuity of this flagship estate of the French vineyard.
