Fourth Growth Classified Estate in the 1855 classification, Château Talbot manages one of the largest vineyards in the Médoc with 110 hectares in a single block within the Saint-Julien appellation. Owned by the Cordier family since 1918, the estate is today led by Nancy Bignon-Cordier and produces wines of exemplary consistency, crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon (66%), Merlot and Petit Verdot, grown on fine Günzian gravels resting on a limestone bedrock rich in asterias fossils.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Château Talbot is rooted in British legend: the estate takes its name from Constable John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, the celebrated Governor of Guyenne and English military commander who fell at the Battle of Castillon in 1453, a founding episode that marked the end of the Hundred Years' War and the English withdrawal from Aquitaine. After belonging for nearly two centuries to the Marquis d'Aux family, the estate featured prominently at the time of the 1855 classification, when it was promoted to Fourth Classified Growth of Saint-Julien. In 1918, Désiré Cordier, a visionary négociant from Moselle and a marketing pioneer ahead of his time, acquired the property. Mayor of Saint-Julien from 1925 to 1940, he organised in 1934 a spectacular longevity festival in the presence of President Albert Lebrun, anticipating what would later be called the "French Paradox". His son Georges, then his grandson Jean, perpetuated this ambition, establishing Talbot as one of the most famous crus in Bordeaux. Since the passing of Jean Cordier in 1993, his daughters Lorraine and Nancy took over the reins of the estate. Today, Nancy Bignon-Cordier, her husband Jean-Paul and their children Philippine, Marguerite and Gustave continue the family adventure, passionately uniting the destiny of a lineage with that of an exceptional vineyard.

Le terroir

The vineyard of Château Talbot extends over 110 hectares in a single block at the heart of the Saint-Julien plateau, reaching the northern boundaries of the appellation bordering Pauillac. This geographical coherence constitutes a rare asset in the Médoc, enabling precise and homogeneous vineyard management. The terroir rests on fine Günzian gravels — pebbles and alluvial gravel carried by the Garonne from the Pyrenees and by the Dordogne from the Massif Central — on a limestone bedrock rich in asterias fossils, forming perfectly draining hillocks. These stony soils ensure optimal drainage while releasing the heat accumulated during the day, promoting regular ripening of the grapes. The vineyard covers 105 hectares of red vines: Cabernet Sauvignon (66%), the Médoc's king grape that brings structure and power, Merlot (30%) for roundness and suppleness, and Petit Verdot (4%) used in touches to intensify colour and aromatic complexity. In addition, there are 5 discreet hectares of white vines (Sauvignon Blanc 80%, Sémillon 20%). Certified High Environmental Value level 3 since 2018, the estate practices exclusively manual harvesting with rigorous sorting carried out by more than 120 grape-pickers.

Les vins

Château Talbot produces three distinct wines that illustrate the richness of its terroir. The grand vin, Château Talbot, embodies the ideal of Saint-Julien: generously bouqueted, extremely stable during ageing, with silky, smooth tannins that make it approachable when young while conferring exceptional ageing potential. Its complex notes of Havana tobacco, liquorice, cassis, cedar and graphite define a racy wine, deliciously classic without the slightest hint of austerity. Aged 15 months in oak barrels with 60% new wood, it is capable of ageing gracefully for decades. The second wine, Connétable Talbot, created in the 1970s, is one of the very first second wines from the Médoc. Marked by a clean, well-defined structure and a long, fresh finish, it offers a classic and elegant profile while remaining more accessible. Finally, Caillou Blanc de Château Talbot, one of the oldest dry white wines from the Médoc with first vintages dating back to the 1930s, comes from 5 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Aged on lees with Burgundian-style stirring, it reveals exotic notes, citrus and white flowers, with an ample palate and fine mineral tension.

Le vigneron

At the helm of Château Talbot since the passing of Jean Cordier in 1993, Nancy Bignon-Cordier today embodies the fourth generation of the Cordier family in service of this exceptional cru. Heiress to a savoir-faire transmitted since 1918, she perpetuates with her husband Jean-Paul and their children Philippine, Marguerite and Gustave the exacting vision bequeathed by her great-grandfather Désiré Cordier. Nancy has surrounded herself with a team of collaborators rich in expertise: Jean-Michel Laporte, general manager of the property since 2018, who supervises a team of around forty people, brings his experience acquired notably at La Conseillante in Pomerol; Damien Hostein, estate manager who grew up on the estate and knows every plot; and Jean-Max Drouilhet, wine production manager. Together, with the precious advice of oenologists Éric Boissenot and Stéphane Derenoncourt, they lead this historic vineyard with rigour and passion, producing wines that make Saint-Julien shine across the world.
