It is difficult to find periods of weakness in the history of the production of the château, and even during the years of Bordeaux wine crisis, the vintage is full of nuggets, such as the 1893 or 1921. To say that the Château d'Yquem produces can - to be the greatest sweet wine in the world is a sad banality.

Château d'Yquem, the only Premier Cru Supérieur in Sauternes since 1855, produces the world's most prestigious sweet wine from 113 hectares of vineyards. Owned by the LVMH group since 1999, the estate is managed by Pierre Lurton and crafts exceptional wines from Sémillon (75%) and Sauvignon blanc (25%), shaped by noble rot and endowed with century-long ageing potential.

L'histoire du domaine

Château d'Yquem's history is rooted in the Middle Ages when the estate belonged to the King of England, Duke of Aquitaine. It became French in 1453 under Charles VII, and was acquired in December 1593 by Jacques de Sauvage, a local nobleman who rebuilt the château and from 1642 oriented production exclusively towards white wines. The vineyard had been cultivated since at least 1711, when Léon de Sauvage d'Yquem became its full owner. In 1785, the marriage of Françoise-Joséphine de Sauvage d'Yquem to Count Louis-Amédée de Lur-Saluces, godson of Louis XV, marked a turning point: widowed three years later, Françoise-Joséphine devoted her energy to building the estate's reputation far beyond France's borders, to the extent that Thomas Jefferson, then ambassador to France, wrote in 1787 that Yquem was "the best white wine of France". In 1855, at the Paris Universal Exhibition, Yquem received the supreme distinction of Premier Cru Supérieur, the only Sauternes estate to attain this rank. For over two centuries, the Lur-Saluces family watched over this treasure until 1999, when LVMH acquired a majority stake and in 2004 entrusted the presidency to Pierre Lurton, already managing Château Cheval Blanc.

Le terroir

The Château d'Yquem vineyard occupies a unique position atop a hill overlooking the Garonne valley, the Ciron river and the Landes forest — a site that reaches 75 metres altitude, the highest in Sauternes. The estate's 113 hectares (around 100 in production, the rest lying fallow or being replanted) rest upon an exceptional geological mosaic: warm, dry gravel and pebble soils on the surface, clay subsoil retaining water reserves, all drained by over 100 kilometres of drains installed since the 19th century. This diversity of soils is a fundamental element of the wine's final complexity. The microclimate is decisive: autumn morning mists caused by the meeting of the Ciron and the Garonne, followed by sunny afternoons, create ideal conditions for the development of Botrytis cinerea, that noble rot which concentrates sugars and aromas. The grape varieties combine 75% Sémillon, providing structure and volume, and 25% Sauvignon blanc, completing the wine with aromatic finesse. Viticulture, always conducted traditionally, excludes chemical weeding; only organic manure is used, and the estate obtained organic certification in 2022 following a conversion begun in 2019.

Les vins

The Château d'Yquem range comprises two distinct wines, each bearing the hallmark of an exceptional terroir. The grand vin, Château d'Yquem, is a sweet Sauternes born from grapes affected by noble rot. Harvesting, exclusively manual, is carried out on average through five to six successive passes over six weeks, sometimes more depending on the vintage: only perfectly 'roasted' grains are picked, the others left on the vine. Average yields barely reach 9 hectolitres per hectare, roughly one glass of wine per vine. After slow pressing, fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels and can last several weeks; this is followed by ageing of 20 to 26 months in 100% new casks. Average production hovers around 65,000 bottles per year, but in some years, if quality is insufficient, the estate chooses to produce nothing: this has occurred ten times since 1910, most recently in 2012. Yquem's style combines extraordinary richness and concentration with vibrant acidity that gives it balance, elegance and century-long ageing potential. Since 1959, the estate has also produced Y d'Yquem (pronounced "Ygrec"), a dry white wine made from the same grape varieties and terroirs, but vinified without residual sugar, and produced every year since 2004 — a confidential rarity of around 10,000 bottles per vintage.

Le vigneron

Since May 2004, Pierre Lurton has presided over the destiny of Château d'Yquem, appointed by LVMH to succeed Comte Alexandre de Lur-Saluces. From a prominent Bordeaux winegrowing family, Pierre Lurton has also managed Château Cheval Blanc since 1991 as well as Cheval des Andes in Argentina, making him one of the most respected figures in the Bordeaux wine region. Trained as a doctor before dedicating himself entirely to wine, this passionate and demanding man has perpetuated the Yquem legend with respect for tradition whilst remaining open to modernity — notably by leading the estate's conversion to organic viticulture, certified from the 2022 vintage onwards. Alongside him, Lorenzo Pasquini, appointed production director in 2020, and Sandrine Garbay, cellar master, form the technical team that oversees every stage of winemaking, from vineyard to bottling, in a quest for absolute excellence.
