Château Alcée is a Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux estate founded in 2011 by Nicolas Thienpont. Spanning 6.5 hectares planted with 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc, this cru sits on a terroir of asteriated limestone and red clay. The style favours finesse, minerality and distinction over power. Since the 2016 vintage, Alcée has established itself as one of the appellation's qualitative benchmarks, praised by international critics for its exceptional quality-to-price ratio.

L'histoire du domaine

The story of Château Alcée begins in July 2011 when Nicolas Thienpont, a prominent figure in the Bordeaux region — already owner of Château Puygueraud and manager of Pavie-Macquin and Larcis Ducasse in Saint-Émilion — acquired 3 hectares of vines in Côtes de Castillon, near Château de Monbadon. The estate's name pays tribute to the flower of the same name, Alcée, a mauve from the Malvaceae family, whilst also evoking several figures from Greek mythology and ancient poetry. In January 2014, the vineyard expanded with an additional 4.5 hectares near Saint-Philippe d'Aiguilhe, bringing the total surface to 6.5 hectares. In 2020, a new sector in Saint-Genès-de-Castillon further enriched the cru, with the 4 hectares of the Bois Perdu lieu-dit integrated into the finest lots of Alcée from 2021 onwards. After an initial settling-in period, the estate took flight from the 2016 vintage and quickly established itself as one of the appellation's most reliable properties.

Le terroir

The Château Alcée vineyard now extends over 6.5 hectares divided into three distinct sectors at the heart of the Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. The initial vines, acquired in 2011, are located at the summit of a limestone plateau where the bedrock surfaces beneath deep red clays — a terroir similar to that of great Saint-Émilion crus. The Saint-Philippe d'Aiguilhe sector, added in 2014, sits on an asteriated limestone plateau alternating between compact clays and very shallow edges. Finally, the Bois Perdu lieu-dit in Saint-Genès-de-Castillon, integrated in 2020, brings roundness and density to the wine. The grape varieties are predominantly Merlot (86%), complemented by 14% Cabernet Franc. Vineyard management follows a rigorous approach: soil aeration under the rows through hoeing, grass cover and green manure sowing between rows, residue-free treatment programme, and selection of genetically diverse plant material during replanting. Manual harvesting at optimal maturity allows rigorous sorting on the vine. Annual production is approximately 20,000 bottles.

Les vins

Château Alcée produces a single red wine that precisely embodies the estate's identity: a Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux blending 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc, from clay-limestone soils on an asteriated limestone plateau. Vinification respects the integrity of the fruit: whole-berry vatting in concrete tanks, gentle extraction through pigeage and remontage, maceration of 24 to 28 days. Ageing takes place over 16 to 18 months in 225 and 500-litre barrels, half renewed. The style of Alcée deliberately sets itself apart from its neighbours: rather than seeking power and concentration, Nicolas Thienpont favours finesse, minerality and distinction. The wine develops more in length than in breadth, with chalky, powdery tannins, vibrant acidity and an aromatic palette evolving from red and black fruits towards floral notes of violet, gentle spices and a persistent touch of freshness. Since 2016, Alcée has won over international critics and established itself as "the favourite cru for enthusiasts seeking excellent quality-to-price ratios" according to Bettane & Desseauve. Recent top vintages: 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2016.

Le vigneron

At the helm of Château Alcée, Nicolas Thienpont represents one of the most respected figures in Bordeaux. Born into a Flemish family established in Bordeaux since the early 20th century — his grandfather Georges acquired Vieux Château Certan in 1924 and his father Georges settled the family at Puygueraud in 1946 — Nicolas was not destined for wine. After brilliant studies in law and philosophy in Bordeaux, Paris and Switzerland, he taught philosophy in Rheims for several years. It was in 1983 that he returned to his Bordeaux roots for his first vintage at Puygueraud, learning the craft on the job with Peynaud's book in hand. Since then, he has built an exceptional reputation as manager of three Premiers Grands Crus Classés in Saint-Émilion (Pavie-Macquin, Larcis Ducasse, Beauséjour) and owner of several estates in Côtes de Castillon and Francs-Côtes de Bordeaux. From 1995 onwards, his collaboration with Stéphane Derenoncourt, then a young cellar worker who became a world-renowned consulting oenologist, marked a decisive turning point in his viticultural approach. Since 2009, Nicolas has been working in tandem with his son Cyrille Thienpont, who handles technical and oenological management alongside him. Together, father and son perpetuate a demanding approach based on respect for terroirs, precision in vineyard and cellar work, and a clear vision: to make each cru the truest and most accomplished expression of its origin.
