Château Carbonnieux, Grand Cru Classé de Graves in both red and white, is one of the oldest and largest estates in Bordeaux, with a history dating back to the 13th century. Located in Léognan at the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, this 92-hectare vineyard has belonged to the Perrin family since 1956. The estate distinguishes itself through balanced production between 50 hectares of red grape varieties and 42 hectares of white varieties, cultivated sustainably on an exceptional gravel terroir, certified High Environmental Value since 2017.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Château Carbonnieux has its roots in the Middle Ages: as early as 1234, Bordeaux archives mention Ramon Carbonnieu, owner of vines in Léognan, and a deed of exchange dated April 1292 attests to the presence of Benedictine monks from the Sainte-Croix Abbey of Bordeaux. They acquired the estate in 1740 and revolutionised white wine vinification through estate bottling, carrying Carbonnieux's reputation as far as the Ottoman sultan's court — legend has it that they exported their white wine under the name "mineral water of Carbonnieux". During the Revolution, the estate was confiscated and sold as national property to the Bouchereau family in 1791, who remained for 87 years and built up a unique collection of 1,242 French and European grape varieties. After phylloxera and two world wars, the property changed hands several times before being acquired in 1956 by Marc Perrin, in the aftermath of a devastating frost. A considerable restoration work then began, continued by his son Antony, who modernised the facilities and expanded the vineyard to 95 hectares. Today, the third generation — Eric, Philibert and Christine Perrin — runs the estate alongside Marc and Andréa, the fourth generation who joined the adventure in 2017 and 2019.

Le terroir

The terroir of Château Carbonnieux extends over a beautiful naturally drained Günzian gravel ridge, at the summit of which the 92-hectare vineyard in a single block unfolds around the château, divided into 119 parcels. The soils, of remarkable geological diversity, result from ancient Garonne sedimentation: deep and massive graves at the summit, clay-limestone soils on the slopes, clay veins, limestone, sands and gravels compose a mosaic of rare terroirs, reinforced by a tongue of Landes sands deposited to the southwest. Each parcel receives personalised attention and care, adapted to its specific pedological characteristics. The vineyard, equally distributed between 50 hectares of red grape varieties — Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (7%), Petit Verdot (3%) — and 42 hectares of white varieties — Sauvignon Blanc (68%), Sémillon (30%), Sauvignon Gris (2%) — benefits from High Environmental Value and ISO 14001 certification since 2011. The estate practises sustainable agriculture with organic tendencies: abandonment of chemical herbicides, sexual confusion, soil ploughing, natural fertilisers, and rigorous parcel-by-parcel management to express the singularity of each terroir.

Les vins

The range of Château Carbonnieux illustrates the rare singularity of an estate classified in both red and white — a distinction that only six Bordeaux châteaux can claim. Château Carbonnieux Blanc, a legendary wine, charms in its youth through its freshness, purity and floral and fruity aromatic intensity; with ageing, it develops notes of dried and candied fruit that offer a wide range of gastronomic pairings. Aged 10 months in barrels and foudres (25% new wood), it is blended from 65 to 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30 to 35% Sémillon, with regular bâtonnage to bring richness and amplitude. Château Carbonnieux Rouge, a great classic of the region for centuries, is vinified with slow and gentle extraction to preserve roundness and mineral typicity; its balanced and silky tannins harmonise with red fruits — blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry — and reveal toasted notes conferred by ageing for 15 to 18 months in Bordeaux barrels (35% new wood). The estate also produces Château Tour Léognan (second wine), La Croix de Carbonnieux and, since 2020, the prestigious cuvée 1741, a 100% Sémillon crafted only in the finest years from the estate's oldest vines.

Le vigneron

Since 1956, the Perrin family has been writing the modern history of Château Carbonnieux with remarkable constancy. Today, the estate is run by the third generation: Eric Perrin, Philibert Perrin and Christine Perrin, who took over from their father Antony, an emblematic figure in the revival of Carbonnieux and Bordeaux wines throughout the world. Eric served as president of the Crus Classés de Graves between 2012 and 2015, while Philibert has presided over the Pessac-Léognan appellation since 2017 — an involvement that testifies to their commitment to the collective influence of the region. Since 2017 and 2019, a fourth generation has entered the adventure: Marc Perrin, commercial manager and brand ambassador, and Andréa Perrin, oenologist and cellar master, in charge of winemaking, environmental policy and research and development. Together, the five family members form a united team in service of a shared vision: to sublimate the heritage of Carbonnieux's terroir and perpetuate the same quest for excellence while respecting natural balances and the centuries-old history of this exceptional estate.
