Domaine Marc Sorrel stands among the finest producers of Hermitage in the northern Rhône Valley. Established in Tain-l'Hermitage in 1928, this family estate cultivates 2.5 hectares of exceptional parcels across the renowned lieux-dits of Le Méal, Les Rocoules, Les Greffieux, and Les Bessards. Guillaume Sorrel, who took over the estate in 2019, continues the traditional, non-interventionist approach inherited from his father Marc, crafting age-worthy red and white Hermitage alongside refined Crozes-Hermitage. The flagship cuvées Le Gréal and Les Rocoules are among the most coveted wines in the Northern Rhône.
The Sorrel family's roots on the Hermitage hillside stretch back to 1893, with the first vines planted between 1910 and 1915. The estate was officially established in 1928 by Félix Sorrel, a notary in Tain-l'Hermitage and Marc's grandfather, in the hamlet of Balavaud. For decades, the family sold its grapes to local négociants, as was common practice. His son Henri, also a notary, continued this approach until the 1950s while planting the first vines in Le Méal — the terroir that would become the estate's beating heart. It was only in 1979 that Henri decided to vinify and bottle his own wines, marking the first chapter of the estate's winemaking identity. Upon his death in 1982, his son Marc took over in 1984 and made the decisive choice to vinify the entire production. He inherited two hectares superbly situated in the central part of the hill and gradually expanded by acquiring parcels in Les Greffieux, Les Bessards and, in 1991, in Larnage for Crozes-Hermitage. Under his discreet yet exacting stewardship, the estate established itself as a benchmark for the appellation. In 2019, his son Guillaume officially took the helm, opening a new chapter while preserving the soul of an estate that spans generations.
The Domaine Marc Sorrel vineyard spans 2.5 hectares in Hermitage and nearly 2 hectares of Crozes-Hermitage in Larnage. On the legendary hillside, the estate cultivates parcels in the most prestigious lieux-dits: Le Méal — the heart of the cru, with deep soils of clay-limestone pebbles and sand, south-facing at mid-slope —, Les Rocoules — an exceptional white wine terroir blending granite, calcareous loess, silica and pebbles —, Les Greffieux, Les Bessards, and Les Plantiers, a little-known family monopole at the foot of the hill. These granitic terroirs, with vertiginous slopes and ideal exposure, benefit from a Mediterranean-influenced microclimate protected from cold northern winds. Many vines exceed 60 years of age, some reaching a century. In Larnage, the white kaolin soils — the famed terres blanches — impart remarkable delicacy and minerality to the whites. Guillaume Sorrel farms according to sustainable viticulture principles leaning towards organic, with ploughed soils and no artificial fertilisers. In the cellar, the philosophy is one of absolute respect for fruit and terroir: spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts, whole-cluster vinification for reds when the vintage permits, ageing exclusively in used barrels for 18 to 20 months — never new oak, to avoid marking the wine. Wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.
The Domaine Marc Sorrel range comprises four Hermitage cuvées and two Crozes-Hermitage, red and white. The classic Hermitage rouge is sourced 85% from Les Plantiers and 15% from Les Bessards, fully destemmed, aged 12 months in used barrels — a wine both supple and structured, capable of ageing several decades. The pinnacle red is Le Gréal, its name formed by blending the lieux-dits Greffieux and Méal: 90% Syrah from Le Méal and 10% from Les Greffieux, with 5 to 8% co-planted Marsanne from the old vines. Produced in fewer than 2,000 bottles annually, it displays velvety texture and exceptional depth. In white, the classic Hermitage, 100% Marsanne from Les Greffieux, offers freshness and aromatic elegance. The legendary Les Rocoules — 90% Marsanne, 10% Roussanne, vines planted in 1928 then complemented in the 1930s and 1950s — comes from one of the appellation's greatest white wine terroirs: a rare, powerful, distinguished wine of telluric finesse and phenomenal persistence, built for 20 years or more of cellaring. The two Crozes-Hermitage from Larnage, crafted with the same care as the Hermitages, rank among the finest quality-to-terroir expressions in the Northern Rhône Valley.
Guillaume Sorrel embodies the soul of Domaine Marc Sorrel today. Trained in viticulture and oenology, this man in his forties officially took over the estate in 2019, after working alongside his father Marc for several years and already bringing notable qualitative refinements across the range. His first solo vintage — 2019 — was hailed as a triumph, and subsequent vintages confirm an exceptional talent that places him among the most gifted winemakers in the northern Rhône Valley. Discreet, meticulous, deeply committed to tradition while bringing a refined vision to vineyard work, Guillaume wisely tends the old vines inherited from four generations of Sorrels. At his side, his wife Julie Azzinari plays an active role in managing the estate. Together, they perpetuate the spirit of a family domaine devoted to authenticity, self-effacement, and absolute respect for terroir — without seeking grandeur or media spotlight, but with uncompromising standards and a fidelity to the belief that the greatest wines are born of patience, silence, and humility.
