Founded in 1835 in Tournon-sur-Rhône, Maison Delas Frères is a benchmark producer in the Rhône Valley. Owned by the Louis Roederer group since 1993, it cultivates 30 hectares of vineyards across Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, and Saint-Joseph. The house crafts wines of rare elegance from Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne, with iconic single-vineyard cuvées such as Les Bessards, La Landonne, and Domaine des Tourettes.

L'histoire du domaine

Delas Frères traces its roots to 1835, when Charles Audibert and Philippe Delas acquired Maison Junique, a wine trading company in Tournon-sur-Rhône, which they renamed Audibert et Delas. The name Delas Frères emerged only in 1924, when Henri and Florentin Delas, sons of Philippe, married the two Audibert daughters and took over the family business. Throughout the twentieth century, the house expanded its vineyards across the finest terroirs of the northern Rhône — Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Cornas, Châteauneuf-du-Pape — building a solid international reputation. In 1977, Champagne House Deutz acquired a stake, bringing financial and technical support. In 1993, the Roederer group took control of both Deutz and Delas, opening a new chapter. The turning point came in 1996, when Fabrice Rosset was appointed president and launched significant investments in the vineyards and production facilities. In 2015, to mark its 180th anniversary, Delas acquired a prestigious property in Tain-l'Hermitage, which became the house's new showcase. In 2022, Marc Hoellinger succeeded Fabrice Rosset as president.

Le terroir

Delas's 30 hectares are distributed across the most prestigious terroirs of the northern Rhône: 10 hectares on the Hermitage hill — including 8 on the legendary Les Bessards slope and 2 on L'Ermite —, 18 hectares in Crozes-Hermitage on the lieu-dit Les Chassis, and 2 hectares in Saint-Joseph. The granitic and mica-schist soils, characteristic of these steep slopes, impart a smoky minerality and distinctive tension to the wines. The house complements its range through long-standing partnerships with selected growers in Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Cornas, and the southern Rhône. Since 1996, Delas has undertaken a complete overhaul of its production facilities: replacing steel tanks with small 85-hectolitre concrete vats for precise plot-by-plot work, installing 600 Burgundy barrels from the finest coopers (François Frère, Seguin Moreau, Damy), and reconstructing the dry-stone walls supporting the terraces. The house's philosophy can be summed up in one phrase: placing man and wine at the heart of the terroir.

Les vins

The Delas range spans the entire Rhône Valley, from north to south, with a marked preference for northern appellations. In red, Syrah reigns supreme: Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes, a blend of the Les Bessards and Grandes Vignes terroirs, displays power and complexity with aromas of dark fruit, spice, and leather; Hermitage Les Bessards, produced only in great years in very limited quantities, reaches summits of density and depth; Hermitage Ligne de Crête, from the Grandes Vignes parcel at 325 metres altitude, seduces with its finesse and granitic minerality. In Côte-Rôtie, La Landonne and Seigneur de Maugiron embody the elegance and complexity of the terroir. The whites, based on Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne, reveal a floral and fruity palette, with Condrieu Clos Boucher and Hermitage blanc Domaine des Tourettes at the forefront. The Delas style favours aromatic precision, fine tannins, and ageing potential, without ever seeking over-extraction.

Le vigneron

Jacques Grange has embodied the technical soul of Delas Frères since 1997. Burgundian by birth, trained in his native region and then at Michel Chapoutier and Jean-Luc Colombo's oenology laboratory, he was recruited by Fabrice Rosset to lead the house's qualitative revolution. His approach combines Burgundian rigour with deep respect for Rhône terroirs: adapting viticultural practices to each parcel, reconstructing dry-stone walls, plot-by-plot vinifications in small concrete vats, and precise ageing in Burgundy barrels. Since 2010, Claire Darnaud-McKerrow has worked alongside him, bringing her expertise in technical innovations such as oxygen management from fermentation to bottling, and in developing the single-vineyard wines that reveal the diversity of the house's appellations. Together, they carry Delas's motto: placing man and wine at the heart of the terroir.
