The Côte-Rôtie appellation is located on the right bank of the Rhône, a little south of Vienne, and extends over an area of approximately 200 hectares, spread over the communes of Ampuis, Saint-Cyr-sur-le- Rhône and Tupin-Semons. The appellation is divided into numerous "lieux-dits", each having their own personality influenced by their orientation and their soil.

The soils of Côte-Rôtie impress with their steep slope, which can reach 60 degrees. They are also very stony, with a percentage of stones of up to 80%. Far from being homogeneous, the soils present significant differences which greatly influence the wines produced from them. Some soils, such as the famous "lieu-dit" Côte Brune, are rich in clay, which gives them good water retention capacity. Vines planted on these soils have more vigorous growth, which results in fuller-bodied and more powerful wines. These wines are also characterized by notes of ripe black fruits, roasting and spices.
Others, like the "lieu-dit" Côte Blonde, are composed of more draining soils. Vines planted on these soils grow more slowly, resulting in more elegant and finer wines. These wines are also characterized by notes of fresh red fruits, flowers and minerality.

Côte-Rôtie benefits from a temperate continental climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. This climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly, which favors the concentration of aromas and the finesse of the tannins.

Côte-Rôtie wines are produced from two main grape varieties: Syrah and Viognier. Syrah is the dominant grape variety, and gives the wine its structure and tannins. Viognier, for its part, brings its finesse and fruity aromas to the wine. Aging is generally done in oak barrels, which contributes to the complexity and finesse of the wines which are generally intense ruby red in color and have aromas of red fruits, black fruits, spices and garrigue. On the palate, they are powerful and complex, with silky tannins and notes of ripe fruit.

Côte-Rôtie wines are exceptional wines, which can be kept for many years. They are perfect to accompany red meats, game and cheeses.
