Château L'Evangile is one of the most iconic estates in Pomerol, located on the southeastern sector of the appellation's plateau, between Pétrus and Cheval Blanc. Owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild since 1990, the estate extends over 22 hectares planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Certified organic since 2021, L'Evangile produces wines of remarkable elegance and finesse, driven by an exceptional terroir of gravel, clay and iron-rich subsoil. Under the stewardship of Juliette Couderc since 2020, the estate continues its stylistic evolution towards purity and tension, combining power with refinement.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Château L'Evangile dates back to 1687, when the property was created under the name Domaine de Fazilleau. In 1741, the vineyard appears in land registries under that name, owned by the Léglise family from Libourne, who actively participated in the establishment of the Pomerol vineyard in the mid-18th century. At the turn of the 19th century, the estate was sold to a lawyer named Isambert, who gave it its current name — L'Evangile — and expanded it to a configuration close to its present size, approximately 13 hectares. In 1862, Paul Chaperon purchased the property: under his stewardship, the Second Empire-style château was built, and by the second edition of Cocks & Féret in 1868, L'Evangile was recognised as a "Premier Cru du Haut-Pomerol". The Chaperon heirs, the Ducasse family, remained owners until 1990. That year, Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) acquired the estate, marking the beginning of profound modernisation: renovation of the cellars completed in 2004, creation of the second wine Blason de L'Evangile, and progressive conversion to organic farming, achieved in 2021.

Le terroir

Château L'Evangile occupies a strategic position on the southeastern sector of the Pomerol plateau, bordered to the north by the vines of Pétrus and separated to the south from Cheval Blanc by nothing more than a small secondary road. The vineyard extends over 22 hectares divided into 43 plots named according to their location (Maison, Cuvier, Catusseau, La Pointe). The terroir is characterised by a rare geological accident: a long strip of gravel surfaces, shared with only two other estates. The soils combine sandy-clay loam and pure gravel, resting on a subsoil rich in iron residues (crasse de fer). Three soil types have been identified: pelosols (swelling clays) at the top of the plateau, well-draining gravel-clay soils, and sandy soils on the slopes. A pioneer among the Domaines Barons de Rothschild properties, L'Evangile has been certified organic since 2021, with biodynamic experiments (silica, horn manure, herbal teas). The 2 kilometres of hedgerows, beehives installed on the estate and widespread grass cover testify to a strong agroecological vision. Since 2023, the château has also been B Corp certified.

Les vins

The range of Château L'Evangile is based on a classic Bordeaux blend: Merlot (approximately 80%), Cabernet Franc (20%) and, since 2019, a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon (1%) planted on gravelly parcels. The Grand Vin is vinified parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled concrete vats, with spontaneous alcoholic fermentation using indigenous yeasts and macerations adjusted according to tannin maturity. The 18-month ageing now takes place in an innovative combination: 50% in new barrels (from the Domaines cooperage), 15% in 26-hectolitre foudres, 8% in terracotta amphorae, and the remainder in once-used barrels. This approach allows a purer expression of the terroir, moving away from an overly marked oaky signature. The second wine, Blason de L'Evangile, sourced from sandy-loam parcels, is aged for a shorter period and intended for earlier consumption. The L'Evangile style has been defined since 2018 by a quest for finesse and precision: silky tannins, chiselled mineral freshness, complex bouquet of black fruits, spices, truffle and dried flowers, with a firm structure promising long ageing potential.

Le vigneron

Juliette Couderc represents the new generation at the helm of Château L'Evangile. Appointed estate manager in 2020 by Saskia de Rothschild, president of Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite, this agronomist from Languedoc and former rugby champion took up her position at just 30 years old. Previously, she honed her skills at Domaine de Long Dai, the Domaines' Chinese vineyard in the Shandong region, where she developed a particular sensitivity to terroir expression and environmentally respectful practices. Succeeding Jean-Pascal Vazart, Juliette Couderc has brought a marked stylistic evolution to the estate: pursuit of finesse and elegance, reduction of oak influence, integration of amphorae and foudres in ageing, ultra-precise parcel management. Under her stewardship, L'Evangile became the first Domaines Barons de Rothschild estate certified organic (2021 vintage), while experimenting with biodynamic practices. Her vision combines technical expertise, agroecological vision and respect for living systems, making L'Evangile an open-air laboratory for tomorrow's viticulture.
