Almost every Italian region manages to produce at least one great wine. Latium, to the north of Rome, is no exception to this rule with in particular the Montiano de Falesco, based on Merlot, which ages wonderfully to reach a very high level as it approaches the decade. Parker's ratings don't seem to have had too much of an effect on pricing yet, so let's take advantage...

Falesco, rebranded as Famiglia Cotarella in 2016, is a landmark estate straddling Lazio and Umbria, 80 kilometres north of Rome. Founded in 1979 by brothers Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella, two of Italy's most esteemed enologists, the estate spans 370 hectares of vineyards across volcanic and clay-limestone soils. Now led by the third generation—Dominga, Marta, and Enrica Cotarella—with Pier Paolo Chiasso as chief winemaker, Falesco embodies a rare balance between rescuing forgotten indigenous varietals like Roscetto and achieving international acclaim with Montiano, a cult Merlot.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Falesco is rooted in a family winemaking tradition dating back to 1920, when Antonio and Domenico Cotarella cultivated vines in Monterubiaglio, Umbria. In 1979, Domenico's sons, Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella, took the decisive step by founding Falesco in Montefiascone, Lazio. Their mission was clear: to resurrect the indigenous 'micro-varieties' of Lazio and Umbria that had fallen into obscurity and elevate these regions to the ranks of Italy's finest appellations. In the 1990s, Riccardo embarked on a pioneering venture by planting Merlot on the volcanic soils of Montefiascone—a bold gamble that gave birth in 1993 to the legendary Montiano, immediately acclaimed by international critics. Simultaneously, twenty years of research conducted in collaboration with the University of Viterbo culminated in 1993 with the creation of Ferentano, the first single-varietal wine made from Roscetto, an ancestral local variety saved from extinction. In 2016, the third generation—Dominga (Riccardo's daughter), Marta and Enrica (Renzo's daughters)—officially took the helm and rebranded the estate as Famiglia Cotarella, affirming the continuity of a family vision while opening a new chapter. In 2017, the estate expanded into Tuscany with the acquisition of Le Macioche in Montalcino.

Le terroir

Falesco's vineyards span 370 hectares across Lazio and Umbria, in the historic Tuscia region—the ancient heartland of Etruscan civilisation—at an altitude of 450 metres, near Lake Bolsena and the hills of Orvieto. The estate enjoys an exceptional geographical position, framed by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and the Apennine Mountains to the east, offering an ideal balance between Mediterranean influences and continental freshness. The soils are remarkably diverse: of volcanic origin in Montefiascone, rich in phosphorus and potassium, perfectly drained, they host indigenous varieties such as Roscetto, Aleatico, Trebbiano and Malvasia, alongside international grapes like Merlot, Syrah and Viognier. In Montecchio, Umbria, where the modern cellar now stands, 260 hectares of vineyards rest on clay-limestone soils, planted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Verdicchio and Vermentino. The estate's philosophy is grounded in a reasoned approach to viticulture, combining respect for terroir with technical innovation. Close collaboration with the University of Viterbo has enabled experimentation with varieties such as Nero d'Avola, Primitivo and Tannat. The estate is Equalitas certified, reflecting its commitment to sustainability.

Les vins

Falesco's range is distinguished by its dual identity: on one hand, the valorisation of forgotten indigenous varietals; on the other, the modern expression of international grapes. In white, the estate excels with Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone, a traditional blend of Trebbiano, Malvasia and Roscetto from the Poggio dei Gelsi vineyard, and above all the remarkable Ferentano, a single-varietal Roscetto crafted since 1998, with aromas of exotic fruits and fresh herbs, barrel-aged. The whites from the Tellus line—Chardonnay and Viognier—complete this palette. In red, the estate's flagship is undoubtedly Montiano, 100% Merlot vinified in stainless steel then aged 12 months in new French barrels, followed by 12 months in bottle—a powerful, elegant wine with aromas of dark fruit, vanilla and spice, capable of extended cellaring. The approachable Vitiano Rosso, a balanced blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, offers a fruity, immediate style. The Tellus line features an intense Syrah and a high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon. The Falesco style favours aromatic precision, structure and longevity, without seeking over-extraction.

Le vigneron

Today, Falesco is driven by a new generation of female winemakers: Dominga Cotarella, Riccardo's daughter, a graduate in agricultural sciences from the University of Tuscia, leads the commercial strategy and embodies the estate's vision with contagious energy. Alongside her, her cousins Marta and Enrica, Renzo's daughters—whom they affectionately call their 'sisters'—form a close-knit and complementary trio: Marta oversees administrative and financial direction with rigour, while Enrica, the most delicate of the three, manages hospitality, communication and the estate's image. Together, they rebranded the estate Famiglia Cotarella in 2016 to affirm the importance of family ties and terroir. The wines are crafted by Pier Paolo Chiasso, Dominga's husband, production director since 1998 and protégé of Riccardo Cotarella. Named Winemaker of the Year 2025, Pier Paolo embodies the technical precision and experimental spirit that characterise the house, constantly exploring new terroirs and refining each vintage. Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella, towering figures in Italian enology, remain invaluable advisors, passing their expertise to this third generation that brings the estate international acclaim.
