Château Lynch-Bages is a Fifth Growth from Pauillac whose reputation far exceeds its 1855 classification. Owned by the Cazes family since 1939, the estate extends over approximately one hundred hectares of deep gravel soils south of Pauillac. With Cabernet Sauvignon (73%) dominating the blend, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, Lynch-Bages wines combine power, finesse and remarkable consistency. Under the leadership of Jean-Charles Cazes since 2006, the estate perpetuates a hedonistic and generous style, capable of exceptional ageing.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Château Lynch-Bages is rooted in the lands of Bages, mentioned as early as the 16th century in the Lafite terriers. The estate took shape in the early 18th century when the Déjean family, notaries and merchants from Pauillac, assembled parcels around the hamlet. In 1749, Pierre Drouillard, Treasurer General of Guyenne, bequeathed the property to his daughter Élisabeth, wife of Thomas Lynch, a merchant of Irish descent whose family had fled Galway in 1691 following the defeat of Irish Catholics. The estate thus entered the Lynch family and remained there until 1824, when it was sold to Sébastien Jurine, a Geneva wine merchant. Classified Fifth Growth in 1855, the estate passed through several hands before being leased in 1934 by Jean-Charles Cazes, a Pauillac baker, who purchased it definitively in 1939. His grandson Jean-Michel Cazes joined him in 1973 and embarked on fifteen years of modernisation that propelled Lynch-Bages among the world's benchmark estates. In 2006, Jean-Charles Cazes (great-grandson of the founder) took over and inaugurated in 2020 a new ultramodern cellar designed by architect Chien Chung Pei.

Le terroir

The Château Lynch-Bages vineyard extends over approximately 100 hectares south and southwest of Pauillac, majestically overlooking the Gironde estuary. The vines rest on gravelly ridges of remarkable geological homogeneity: deep gravel mixed with sand over limestone subsoil, offering perfect drainage and ideal thermal retention capacity. The grape varieties reflect Médoc tradition: 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Since 2006, an in-depth parcel study using satellite technologies has subdivided the 90 cadastral parcels into nearly 200 micro-parcels, refining the understanding and management of each terroir. The property obtained High Environmental Value certification (level 3) in 2018, favouring precision viticulture, generalised sexual confusion and geolocated fertilisation. The temperate climate of the Médoc, moderated by the proximity of the estuary, allows optimal ripening of the grapes.

Les vins

The Château Lynch-Bages range is built around the eponymous grand vin, an assemblage dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (approximately 70%), vinified parcel by parcel in 80 temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. After malolactic fermentation (one third in vats, two thirds in barrels), the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 75% new wood. The Lynch-Bages style is immediately recognisable: power and structure wrapped in generous substance with silky tannins, notes of blackcurrant, graphite and mint, with a saline freshness on the finish. Generous from its youth, it gains in complexity and depth with time. The second wine, Echo de Lynch-Bages (created in 2008, succeeding Haut-Bages Averous), expresses roundness and suppleness. Since 1990, the estate has also produced Blanc de Lynch-Bages (Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Muscadelle), vinified mostly in barrels, one of the first white wines produced by a Grand Cru Classé of the Médoc.

Le vigneron

Jean-Charles Cazes embodies the fourth generation of the family at the helm of Château Lynch-Bages. Born in Bordeaux in 1974, with a degree in economics and finance and holder of the DUAD (university diploma in tasting aptitude), he began his career in Brazil as a financial controller before joining the family business in 2001 as sales manager. In 2006, at only 32 years old, he naturally succeeded his father Jean-Michel, an emblematic figure who had propelled Lynch-Bages to the world summit. Jean-Charles inherited this visionary spirit and embarked in 2007 on an ambitious renovation project with architect Chien Chung Pei, culminating in 2020 with the inauguration of an ultramodern cellar equipped with 80 gravity-flow vats. Awarded in 2013 the Innovation Prize from La Revue du Vin de France for the VINIV concept, he pursues a permanent quest for quality and precision, while preserving the generous and hedonistic style that has made the estate's reputation.
