Château Lynsolence is a confidential 2.5-hectare Saint-Émilion Grand Cru located in Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens, on sandy-gravel terroirs with a ferruginous subsoil. Crafted from 100% old-vine Merlot, this garage wine launched in 1998 embodies the ambition of radical artisanal viticulture: yields below 25 hl/ha, ageing in new barriques, meticulous parcel-by-parcel work. Created by Denis Barraud and named by his daughter Sandra who also designed the label, this tiny production swiftly joined the exclusive circle of cult wines from Bordeaux's Right Bank.

L'histoire du domaine

The viticultural history of the lieu-dit 'Le Bert' in Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens dates back to the late 19th century, when Pierre-Henri Descrambe planted the first vines in the 1880s. The family estate was passed down through the generations until Denis Barraud, Descrambe's grandson, took over in 1971. But it was in 1998 that Château Lynsolence was truly born, in the wake of the garage wine movement that was transforming Saint-Émilion. The estate's name — 'Lynsolence' — was conceived by Sandra Barraud, Denis's daughter, who also designed the label for this new cuvée. It represented a radical parcel selection: just 2.5 hectares, drawn from the 36 hectares owned by the Barraud family across the appellation. From the very first vintage, the wine established itself through its density, concentration and assertive character, swiftly joining the exclusive circle of prestige micro-productions from the Right Bank. Denis Barraud passed away in February 2023 after a long illness, leaving behind the legacy of a wine that had become a benchmark.

Le terroir

The 2.5 hectares of Château Lynsolence are divided between two distinct sectors of Saint-Émilion, in the commune of Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens. One parcel lies near Château Monbousquet, on gravelly sand terroir with iron deposits. But it is to the east, near the legendary Valandraud, that the estate's finest parcels are found: a complex soil of gravel, clay, rock and alluvial sands over a cool subsoil rich in crasse de fer. This terroir, both free-draining and structured, lends the wines their characteristic tension. The vines, planted exclusively to Merlot, average 55 years of age, with a planting density of 5,600 vines per hectare. Viticulture is conducted meticulously: manual harvesting, leaf-thinning, green harvesting, and yields deliberately limited to between 19 and 25 hectolitres per hectare — producing fewer than 1,000 cases annually. In the cellar, after a 6 to 10-day cold maceration, vinification takes place in 400-litre barrels and temperature-controlled 50-hectolitre wooden vats, followed by malolactic fermentation in new barrels and 18 months' ageing in 100% new French oak barriques.

Les vins

Château Lynsolence produces a single cuvée, Lynsolence, crafted exclusively from Merlot — a radical choice that defines the estate's signature. The style sits squarely within the lineage of the great garage wines of Saint-Émilion: deep, almost black colour, opulent nose blending candied black fruits (black cherry, blackberry, cassis), notes of chocolate, liquorice, roasted coffee and flowers, with an oak presence that is evident yet integrated. On the palate, the wine unfolds a rich, velvety texture, impressive concentration of ripe fruits, silky, polished tannins, and a long finish marked by a chalky mineral edge. Recent vintages (2018, 2019, 2020) have consistently scored between 92 and 95 points from international critics, confirming the estate's upward trajectory. While the wine can be enjoyed young thanks to the finesse of its tannins, it possesses considerable ageing potential — easily two decades for the great vintages. A confidential production that embodies the hedonism and sensuality of Right Bank Merlot elevated to its highest level of exigence.
