Château Moulin Pey-Labrie is a 7.63-hectare organic and biodynamic estate in Canon-Fronsac, Bordeaux, run by Bénédicte and Grégoire Hubau since 1988. The estate produces red wines predominantly from Merlot (95%) with a touch of Malbec, sourced from 65-year-old vines planted on clay-limestone slopes over Fronsac molasse. Pioneers of low-intervention viticulture in Bordeaux, the Hubaus craft characterful, age-worthy wines, certified organic by Ecocert since 2013.

L'histoire du domaine

The story of Château Moulin Pey-Labrie begins in 1988 when Bénédicte and Grégoire Hubau, originally from Picardy in northern France, decided to embark on a radical life change. After three years of searching and visiting countless properties across various French regions, they discovered this Fronsac estate just three days before the harvest and were instantly captivated by the site: a hilltop crowned by the ruins of a 12th-century windmill, offering a 360° panorama over Saint-Émilion, the Aquitaine bridge and the valley below. The estate's name references this ancient mill and the lieu-dit "Pey", meaning "top of the hillside" in the local vernacular. A 19th-century owner, Paul Princeteau, animal painter and friend of Toulouse-Lautrec, had already left his mark on the property's history. In 1990, the Hubaus strengthened their position by acquiring Château Haut-Lariveau (4.5 hectares) and Château des Combes-Canon (3.5 hectares), bringing their total vineyard holdings to approximately 15 hectares. Guided in their early years by Michel Rolland and their winemaking neighbours, Bénédicte and Grégoire have forged their own path, becoming respected figures in natural, uncompromising viticulture within Bordeaux.

Le terroir

The estate extends over the hillsides of Fronsac, a few kilometres west of Pomerol, on the right bank of the Dordogne. The 7.63 hectares of Château Moulin Pey-Labrie rest on clay-limestone slopes over Fronsac molasse, a distinctive subsoil that imparts minerality and tension to the wines. The vines, with an average age of 65 years (some parcels date back to the 1960s), are planted at a density of 6,000 to 7,000 vines per hectare and benefit from a favourable Mediterranean microclimate. The grape composition favours Merlot (95 to 98%) complemented by a touch of Malbec (2 to 5%). Since their arrival, Bénédicte and Grégoire Hubau have committed the estate to sustainable, organic (Ecocert certification obtained in 2013, first certified vintage in 2015) and biodynamic farming, with ploughed soils, natural grass cover between rows and horse ploughing in certain parcels. Manual harvest, total destemming, spontaneous fermentations in small temperature-controlled concrete vats, followed by parcel-by-parcel ageing in French oak barrels (30 to 50% new wood depending on the cuvée) for 18 months: each step reflects a pursuit of finesse and authentic expression of terroir.

Les vins

The estate's range comprises several labels drawn from the 15 hectares of vines spread across three properties. The flagship cuvée, Château Moulin Pey-Labrie in Canon-Fronsac, represents the most accomplished expression of the limestone hillside terroir: a structured, full-bodied wine built for ageing, where Merlot expresses itself with concentration, tension and a chalky minerality. Production reaches approximately 35,000 bottles per year. A confidential cuvée, Cuvée Bénédicte, crafted from 100% Merlot from the estate's oldest vines, does not exceed 50 cases and embodies the quintessence of the Hubau style. Added to this are Château Haut Lariveau (Fronsac AOC, 100% Merlot, gravelly-clay and clay-limestone soils), more accessible in youth whilst retaining depth and elegance, and Château Moulin, a cuvée from lower-slope parcels, supple and fruity. The Piverts cuvée, vinified without added sulphites, reflects the estate's commitment to natural winemaking. The overall style favours freshness, finesse and ageing potential (3 to 12 years) over immediate gratification: upright, elegant wines that demand patience and reward enthusiasts of authentic fine Bordeaux.

Le vigneron

Bénédicte and Grégoire Hubau form an unconventional duo in the Bordeaux landscape. Nothing predestined them to become vignerons: Bénédicte was a computer specialist, Grégoire a chemist, both from northern France with no family ties to the wine world. Yet their love of wine and desire to produce something authentic led them in 1988 to leave everything behind and settle in Fronsac, three days before the harvest of their first vintage. Passionate autodidacts, they learned on the job with the generous help of their neighbours and the guidance of Michel Rolland in their early years. Their philosophy quickly took shape: respect the vine, express the terroir with finesse and elegance, only release cuvées when they are ready, even if this means years of cellaring. Running counter to traditional Bordeaux, Bénédicte and Grégoire favour barbecues with winemaking friends from Beaujolais, the Loire or Languedoc over society dinners. Their natural approach, humility and tireless energy have made them respected figures of a new generation of Bordeaux vignerons, seeking above all authenticity and pleasure in every bottle.
