Château Nairac is a Second Cru Classé from Barsac, ranked in the 1855 classification, located a few kilometres south-east of Bordeaux. The estate extends over 17 hectares planted with 90% Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, on gravelly, limestone-rich clay soils. Since 2022, the estate has been managed by Jean-Marc Dulong on behalf of Grands Chais de France, which has undertaken major modernisation works and conversion to organic farming.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Château Nairac begins in the mid-17th century, when the vineyard was founded by André Duranceau in Barsac. In 1759, the estate was acquired by Élizabeth Prost, daughter of a Saint-Domingue planter, before being sold in 1777 to Élisée Nairac, a member of a family of Huguenot shipowners from Bordeaux. It was he who gave the estate its name and who, in 1786, commissioned the architect André Mollié, a collaborator of Victor Louis for the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, to build the elegant neoclassical château that still stands today at the entrance to the village. After Élisée's death in 1791, his two daughters Henriette and Émilie inherited the estate and ran it until their deaths in the 1830s. In 1837, the heirs sold to Bernard Capdeville, owner of the neighbouring Château Broustet: the two estates merged under the name Broustet-Nairac and were classified together as Second Growth in 1855. Nairac regained its independence in 1906, before entering a long period of decline. The renaissance began in 1971 when the American Thomas Heeter and his wife Nicole Tari, daughter of the owner of Château Giscours, bought the property and made substantial investments to restore the vineyard and buildings. In 2022, after difficult years marked by frost damage and technical problems, the Tari family signed a 25-year lease with Grands Chais de France, opening a new chapter for this historic estate.

Le terroir

The Château Nairac vineyard extends over 17 hectares in the northern part of the Barsac appellation, less than two kilometres from the Garonne. This proximity to the river is essential: the autumn mists that rise at dawn, born from the meeting of the cold waters of the Ciron and the warmer waters of the Garonne, encourage the development of Botrytis cinerea, the noble rot essential for great sweet wines. The terroir comprises a mosaic of soils: gravel and limestone for some parcels, calcareous marls and red sands for others, resting on a bed of starfish limestone that gives the wine its characteristic minerality. The grape varieties are dominated by Sémillon at 90%, complemented by 6% Sauvignon Blanc and 4% Muscadelle. Since 2022, under the direction of Jean-Marc Dulong for Grands Chais de France, the estate has undertaken major renovation work on the vineyard and cellars, as well as conversion to organic farming. Harvesting is done by hand in successive passes, selecting only the grapes affected by noble rot at their optimal degree of ripeness.

Les vins

The estate produces two wines: Château Nairac, the grand vin, and Esquisse de Nairac, the second wine. After manual harvesting in successive passes, vinification begins in temperature-controlled tanks, then the musts are transferred to French oak barrels to complete fermentation. The wines are aged for around thirty months in casks, with a moderate proportion of new wood to preserve the freshness of the fruit. The style of Château Nairac is recognisable by its finesse and remarkable balance: the sweetness is always counterbalanced by a lively, chiselled acidity that gives the wine its tension and exceptional ageing potential. On the nose, the wine displays complex aromas of candied fruit, citrus, acacia honey and apricot, with notes of saffron and cedar. On the palate, it is rich and elegant, powerful without heaviness, with a long, fresh finish enhanced by a delicate bitterness. Capable of being enjoyed young, Nairac reaches full maturity after 12 to 25 years of ageing, or even longer in great vintages such as 2003 and 2010.

Le vigneron

Since April 2022, Château Nairac has been managed by Jean-Marc Dulong, who also runs Château Bastor-Lamontagne on behalf of Grands Chais de France, a subsidiary of the Helfrich family from Alsace. This 25-year lease marks a turning point for the estate after a difficult period: Jean-Marc Dulong has undertaken a complete modernisation of the cellars and substantial restoration work in the vineyard, whilst initiating conversion to organic farming. The 2022, 2023 and 2024 vintages already bear witness to the revival of this estate, with wines praised for their freshness, richness and complexity. The estate remains the property of the Tari family.
