Château Poujeaux is an exceptional estate in the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation, located on the Günzian gravel ridges of Grand-Poujeaux in the Médoc. Classified as Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, the 70-hectare estate produces wines of refined elegance from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Since 2008, the Cuvelier family, owners of Clos Fourtet in Saint-Émilion, have managed the property with ambition under the leadership of Matthieu Cuvelier and Christophe Labenne, advised by oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Château Poujeaux stretches back to the Middle Ages, when the Terre de Poujeaux was a lordship dependent on Latour Saint-Mambert — the future Château Latour in Pauillac. The name first appeared on a label in 1806, but it was only during the 19th century that the estate achieved true viticultural independence and began producing its first wines under its own name. In 1880, the property was divided into three parts following an inheritance. The estate's reconstitution began in 1921 when François Theil purchased a first parcel, and was completed in 1957 when his son reunified the three entities, restoring the château to its historic form — 100 hectares including 70 of vines. Jean Theil then took charge and built the domaine's reputation throughout the 20th century. His children succeeded him from 1997 to 2007. In 2008, a new chapter opened: Philippe Cuvelier, owner of Clos Fourtet in Saint-Émilion, acquired the château and initiated significant investments to elevate Poujeaux to the highest level.

Le terroir

The Château Poujeaux vineyard extends over a single 70-hectare block at the summit of the Grand-Poujeaux ridge, in the northeast of the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation, between Margaux and Saint-Julien. The terroir rests primarily on Günzian gravel from the Quaternary period — alluvial deposits of pebbles and stones from the Périgord and Pyrénées, laid down during the Günz glaciation — over a limestone and clay-limestone subsoil. The parcels reach up to 25 metres in elevation on the Poujeaux plateau, offering exceptional drainage and natural concentration. The vineyard, planted at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare, comprises 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The vines, with an average age of 30 years, are managed using sustainable agriculture techniques including soil tillage and respect for natural balance. Harvesting is manual, sorting rigorous — both manual and mechanical — and vinification is conducted parcel by parcel using whole berries, in a combination of stainless steel, wood and concrete tanks, with spontaneous fermentation and gentle extraction.

Les vins

The Château Poujeaux range comprises three cuvées. The grand vin, Château Poujeaux, in the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation, embodies the terroir's finest expression: a wine of deep colour, with a complex bouquet blending black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant, blueberry), floral notes (rose, lily), spicy and mineral touches. On the palate, it unfolds an imposing architecture supported by silky, fine-grained tannins, never aggressive, with dense material, vibrant tension and a long, persistent finish. The 12-month ageing in barrels — 30 to 33% new oak — brings structure and complexity without ever masking the fruit. The estate's style favours elegance, finesse and balance over ostentatious power. The second wine, La Salle de Poujeaux, is distinguished by its immediate appeal, supple tannins and bright fruit character. Finally, Haut de Poujeaux, in the Haut-Médoc appellation, comes from specific parcels outside the estate's historic core. Annual production amounts to approximately 21,000 to 24,000 cases of the grand vin.

Le vigneron

Matthieu Cuvelier embodies the ambition and energy that drive Château Poujeaux towards excellence today. Managing the estate since his family's acquisition in 2008, he has brought fresh dynamism whilst preserving the family spirit and soul of this great cru bourgeois. At his side, Christophe Labenne — grandson of the former Theil owners — serves as operational director of the château, embodying continuity and the living memory of the domaine. Together, they form a complementary duo united by the same pursuit of quality and precision. Their approach is supported by the technical counsel of oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt, a leading figure in the Bordeaux vineyard, whose expertise helps refine the terroir's expression vintage after vintage. The team also includes Stéphane Dubrulle as head of viticulture and Laurent Perroteau as cellar master. Under this committed and rigorous leadership, the estate continues to progress, as evidenced by the exceptional scores achieved in recent years — up to 94/100 for certain vintages from La Revue du Vin de France.
