Château Haut-Batailley is a Fifth Growth estate classified in 1855, located in the southern part of the Pauillac appellation, bordering Saint-Julien. Acquired in 2017 by the Cazes family, owners of Château Lynch-Bages, this 41-hectare estate sits on deep Garonne gravel soils and produces elegant, harmonious wines marked by the finesse and balance characteristic of this exceptional terroir.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Château Haut-Batailley is inseparable from that of its neighbour, Château Batailley, an estate established as early as 1791 whose name evokes the battles of the Hundred Years' War believed to have taken place on these lands. In 1816, the négociant house Barton & Guestier acquired the estate, and Daniel Guestier set about expanding and modernising it, laying the foundations for its renown. Château Batailley obtained its Fifth Growth classification in 1855, recognising the quality of its terroir. In 1932, brothers François and Marcel Borie purchased the property. Ten years later, in 1942, in order to avoid inheritance difficulties, they decided to divide the estate: Marcel kept the larger portion with the château, while François created Haut-Batailley, which he expanded in 1951 by acquiring an additional 15 hectares from Château Duhart-Milon. Following François Borie's death in 1953, the estate passed to his daughter Françoise de Brest-Borie, managed by her brother Jean-Eugène Borie, then by François-Xavier Borie and his daughter Émeline. In March 2017, the Cazes family acquired the estate, opening an ambitious new chapter for this historic cru.

Le terroir

The vineyard of Château Haut-Batailley now extends over 41 hectares in the southern part of the Pauillac appellation, bordering Saint-Julien, on an exceptional terroir of deep Garonne gravel mixed with clay and sand. This location gives the wines a particular elegance and finesse, closer to the Saint-Julien style than to the powerful character typical of Pauillac. The grape variety mix reflects the classic Médoc identity: 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, on vines averaging 35 years of age. Upon their arrival in 2017, the Cazes family embarked on an extensive replanting programme: 19 hectares of parcels classified as AOC Pauillac, left fallow for many years, were brought back into cultivation from 2018, doubling the estate's surface area in three years. The viticultural philosophy is based on sustainable agriculture with a focus on biodiversity: in 2022, more than 910 trees and shrubs of 14 different varieties were planted in the heart of the vineyard as part of an agroforestry approach. Harvesting is manual, followed by rigorous triple sorting. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, and ageing lasts 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new.

Les vins

Château Haut-Batailley produces two wines from its exceptional terroir. The grand vin, a blend of 60 to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30 to 40% Merlot depending on the vintage, is distinguished by its graceful, refined style, marked by an elegance uncommon in Pauillac. The wines display a fine, silky tannic structure, remarkable freshness and aromatic depth centred on black fruits, graphite and spices, with significant ageing potential. The estate's second wine, La Tour d'Aspic, takes its name from the emblematic tower erected in 1875 that marks the entrance to the Pauillac appellation. Since the Cazes family took over in 2017, quality has continued to progress, with the 2018, 2019 and 2020 vintages receiving unanimous praise from international critics and illustrating the estate's renewal. The Haut-Batailley style combines finesse, tension and complexity, in an authentic and distinguished expression of the Pauillac terroir.

Le vigneron

Since March 2017, Château Haut-Batailley has been run by the Cazes family, an emblematic figure in Bordeaux and owner of the legendary Château Lynch-Bages. Jean-Charles Cazes, general manager of the family group, has taken charge of the estate's destiny with an ambitious vision: to preserve the identity and style of the cru while making the necessary investments for its development. In the very first year, the château walls were repainted in a striking pink hue, visible from Saint-Julien, symbolically asserting the estate's renewal. On the technical side, Julien Galland, the estate's technical manager, rigorously and sensitively oversees the winemaking, favouring tension and finesse over immediate opulence. Under the impetus of the Cazes family, Haut-Batailley has doubled its vineyard area, modernised its facilities and developed a demanding environmental approach, placing biodiversity at the heart of its concerns. The commitment of this passionate family, respectful of the heritage they have received, augurs a radiant future for this Fifth Growth estate in full renaissance.
