Located in Portets at the heart of the Graves appellation, Château Crabitey extends over 31 hectares of deep Garonne gravel soils. Owned by Arnaud de Butler since 2008, this estate with a unique history—a former orphanage founded by Franciscan nuns in 1872—produces red wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, alongside whites from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Regularly distinguished by the Guide Hachette, Crabitey has established itself as one of the appellation's benchmark estates, combining classic Bordeaux style with ISO 14001-certified environmental commitment.

L'histoire du domaine

Château Crabitey traces its origins to an 18th-century residence surrounded by vineyards, pine and chestnut trees. In the 1850s, Mr Faye, then owner, devoted his estate to the education of orphans and upon his death passed the property to the Archbishopric of Bordeaux. In 1872, the Franciscan Sisters of Seillon arrived at Crabitey and founded the orphanage of Providence. They taught the children the trade of vine and wine, making viticulture the essential resource of the community. Crabitey wine gradually acquired a notable reputation. In 1985, the congregation called upon Jean-Ralph de Butler, an agricultural engineer, to professionalise the winemaking activity: he modernised production facilities, rehabilitated existing plots and planted new vines. In 1998, his son Arnaud joined him after a career in finance and viticultural training. For ten years, father and son worked together to elevate the wines of Crabitey. When the sisters decided to sell the property in 2008, Arnaud purchased this unique estate whose architecture still recalls its remarkable history.

Le terroir

The Château Crabitey vineyard extends over 31 hectares in a single block at Portets, on the Graves plateau south of Bordeaux. The terroir rests on deep Garonne gravel—those heat-absorbing gravelly soils typical of the appellation that promote drainage and early ripening. Located near the Garonne, the vineyard benefits from the river's moderating influence. From 2008, Arnaud de Butler undertook an extensive restructuring programme: the surface area increased from 12 to 30 hectares, 50% of the vines were replanted, and Cabernet Sauvignon was prioritised on the finest gravel ridges of the property. The estate has adopted sustainable viticulture practices and obtained ISO 14001 certification in 2017, demonstrating its environmental commitment. In 2018, a comprehensive project to plant 260 metres of hedgerows aimed to create a natural corridor conducive to biodiversity development, whilst cover cropping with oats, vetch and clover naturally enriches the soils with organic matter across nearly 30 hectares.

Les vins

The Château Crabitey range encompasses red and white wines, with an annual production of approximately 200,000 bottles. The reds, which represent the majority of production, are crafted from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (approximately 47%), Merlot (47%) and Petit Verdot (6%), reflecting the strategic choice to favour Cabernet Sauvignon on the finest gravel ridges since 2008. Aged in barrel with one-third new oak, these Graves reds are distinguished by their sustained colour, bouquet of ripe red fruits and spices, and ample, balanced palate structured by fine tannins. The style combines body with freshness, in the purest tradition of classic Bordeaux. The whites, produced from Sauvignon Blanc (approximately 70%) and Sémillon (30%), spend six months in barrel with regular lees stirring. They offer a citrus and mineral aromatic profile, with a taut palate and fine length. The estate also produces a Grand Vin cuvée from a parcel selection, regularly rewarded—the 2018 vintage notably earned two stars in the Guide Hachette.

Le vigneron

Arnaud de Butler embodies the renaissance of Château Crabitey. After several years in finance in Paris, this former financier decided to settle in the Bordelais and undertake viticultural training to take over his father's legacy. He joined his father Jean-Ralph in 1998 and took the helm in 1999, before becoming sole owner in 2008 when the Franciscan sisters withdrew. From his first vintages, Arnaud accumulated distinctions and established Crabitey among the flagship estates of the Graves appellation. Visionary and rigorous, he orchestrated a transformation of considerable scale over fifteen years: doubling the vineyard, restructuring parcels with preference given to Cabernet Sauvignon on the finest ridges, building a new winery, obtaining ISO 14001 certification. His wines, greatly enriched and more assertive, have progressed enormously in elegance in both red and white. Arnaud de Butler represents the modern winegrower who combines technical rigour, environmental respect and fidelity to classic Bordeaux tradition.
