A must in Châteauneuf du Pape, Château Cabrières has belonged to the Arnaud family for three generations. 20 hectares of vines planted mainly with Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Since the end of the 60s, Guy Arnaud has kept 1000 to 2000 bottles of each vintage each year, which today allows his daughter Agnès and her husband Patrick Vernier, a former Champagne broker, to be at the head of a real treasure: a unique wine library in the region.

Château Cabrières is a historic estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, located on the Rhône plateau 3 kilometres north of the village. Owned by the Arnaud family since the 1950s, the domaine covers 28.5 hectares in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation and produces red and white wines from the 13 permitted grape varieties of the appellation, with a dominance of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Managed since 2009 by Agnès Arnaud and Patrick Vernier, Château Cabrières crafts a tiered range — Tradition, Prestige and Centenaire — that embodies the richness and diversity of the rolled pebble, sand and urgonian limestone terroirs characteristic of this emblematic appellation of the southern Rhône Valley.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Château Cabrières dates back to a distant period, as evidenced by a bread oven door found on the site, the stonework of which recalls 14th and 15th century techniques. But the modern wine history of the estate begins with the Arnaud family: Louis Arnaud, a winegrower and cooper, acquired the property in the 1950s and laid the first foundations of a promising vineyard. Until 1955, the harvest was sold to négociants; from that pivotal year onwards, the estate began to produce, bottle and sell its own wines, first under the name Domaine Cabrières, then as Château Cabrières from the 1960s. His son Guy succeeded him and continued the work of establishing the domaine's reputation, notably developing a unique wine library in the region by preserving 1,000 to 2,000 bottles of each vintage every year from the late 1960s onwards. In March 2009, Agnès Arnaud, Guy's daughter, and her husband Patrick Vernier, a former Champagne broker, took over the management of the property with the aim of perpetuating this fine family story.

Le terroir

Château Cabrières is located on the Châteauneuf-du-Pape plateau, 3 kilometres north of the village and 7 kilometres south of Orange. The vineyard covers 28.5 hectares in the AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape, plus 4 hectares in Côtes du Rhône and 5 hectares of table wine. The terroir presents a remarkable diversity: the estate has the three types of soil characteristic of the appellation — rolled quartzite pebbles that store heat during the day and release it at night, urgonian clay-limestone soils, and sandy soils — a mosaic that contributes to the aromatic complexity of the wines. The subsoil is essentially composed of Burdigalian molasse. The region enjoys an exceptional Mediterranean climate, with around 300 days of sunshine a year and the mistral, a strong, dry northerly wind that blows for more than 120 days a year. It is one of the driest areas of the Rhône Valley and one of the sunniest regions in France. The average age of the vines is around 50 years, with some centenary Grenache parcels. The estate practises sustainable viticulture, with ploughing, earthing up and soil work according to traditional methods.

Les vins

The Château Cabrières range is built around red and white Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, complemented by red and rosé Côtes du Rhône. In red, the Tradition cuvée forms the backbone of the estate: a blend of 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 20% Mourvèdre and 10% Cinsault, it is aged for 12 months in Allier oak barrels after a 4-week maceration with pumping over, délestage and pigeage. The Prestige cuvée incorporates all 13 permitted grape varieties of the appellation, including at least 50% old-vine centenary Grenache, with 18 months ageing in barrels. The Centenaire cuvée crowns the range. The harvest, exclusively manual in mid-September, undergoes three selective sortings to retain only the best berries. Yields are controlled, around 25 to 30 hectolitres per hectare. In white, the wines blend Grenache blanc, Clairette, Roussanne and Bourboulenc for supple and aromatic cuvées. The estate's style favours concentration, silky tannic structure and ageing potential, with wines capable of evolving for 15 to 20 years depending on the vintage.

Le vigneron

Since March 2009, Agnès Arnaud and her husband Patrick Vernier have been at the helm of Château Cabrières, continuing the work begun by three generations of the Arnaud family. Agnès, daughter of Guy Arnaud and granddaughter of Louis Arnaud, embodies the continuity of a family winemaking passion rooted in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape plateau since the 1950s. At her side, Patrick Vernier, a former Champagne broker, brings his experience in wine trading and marketing. Together, they took up the torch with the aim of perpetuating the estate while maintaining the quality standards that have built its reputation. Their two children, Arnaud and Astrid, represent the fourth generation to grow up on this exceptional terroir. The couple has maintained the estate's values — sustainable viticulture, respect for terroir, meticulous ageing — while developing the international visibility of their wines, widely praised by American and British critics over the vintages.
