Closerie Saint Roc is a 16-hectare estate located in Puisseguin, at the gateway to Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, acquired in 2013 by the Amoreau family, owners of the legendary Château Le Puy. Planted with 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon on clay-limestone terroir with asteriated limestone bedrock, this Bordeaux estate serves as a laboratory for natural biodynamic viticulture, producing wines of remarkable finesse and tension.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Closerie Saint Roc is rooted in a fascinating medieval past: in the 12th century, the site was a meeting point between the English who occupied Aquitaine and the French determined to reconquer their lands, serving as a store where wine and provisions were exchanged between the two warring camps. Centuries later, Alex Anglebin (1807-1902), an ancestor of the Amoreau family, rediscovered this land acquired by his wife's family and revived the vineyard, then planted with Mourvèdre and Colombard, before the property passed out of the family. In 2013, Pascal Amoreau, representing the 14th generation of winemakers since 1610, repurchased this land with exceptional terroir located just one kilometre from Château Le Puy. The Closerie then became a passionate project led by Pascal, his son Adrien, his sister Valérie and Harold Langlais, conceived as a space for viticultural experimentation aimed at pushing the boundaries of biodynamics.

Le terroir

Located in the commune of Puisseguin, as an extension of the prestigious Coteau des Merveilles, the Closerie Saint Roc vineyard extends over 16 hectares at approximately 90 metres altitude. The terroir is distinguished by shallow soils resting directly on a predominantly clay-limestone subsoil with a bedrock of asteriated limestone, the same fossil-rich rock found in Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, a true vector of tension and minerality. The vines, averaging 35 years of age, are cultivated using certified biodynamic methods according to ancestral techniques developed by the Amoreau family over four centuries. The estate functions as a genuine laboratory for innovation: soils are grassed over and minimally worked to promote plant cover, vines are treated with infusions of local plants such as horsetail and nettle, and meticulous parcel division has been organised with the planting of fruit trees and companion plants. In 2020, the estate collaborated with Claude and Lydia Bourguignon, world-renowned specialists in soil microbiology, to further refine knowledge of this unique ecosystem.

Les vins

The Closerie Saint Roc range comprises several cuvées, each expressing a facet of the terroir. The main cuvée, Closerie Saint Roc, reflects the estate's varietal composition (70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon) and is distinguished by great finesse, lovely tension and beautiful minerality with perfectly integrated tannins. Since 2019, the estate has developed a Burgundian-style parcel approach with three climat cuvées: Les Noyers, a high-altitude parcel on asteriated limestone offering subtle wines with pronounced minerality; Les Pins, on well-ventilated slopes with deep silt for a more Loire-like profile; and Les Sureaux, with clay and sandy soils yielding fleshy wines with pronounced ageing potential. Vinifications are natural with spontaneous fermentations using indigenous yeasts by infusion method, without synthetic additions. Ageing takes place for 18 to 24 months in mature foudres and used barrels with dynamisation, without fining or filtration, and often without added sulphur. The style is resolutely focused on elegance and drinkability.

Le vigneron

At the helm of Closerie Saint Roc is Pascal Amoreau, representing the 14th generation of a family that has cultivated vines since 1610, a man of conviction who recognised in this terroir the potential for a great experimental laboratory. Alongside him, his son Adrien embodies the succession and continuity of this exacting vision. Harold Langlais, director of operations and co-owner, plays a central role in winemaking: after a career in retail that did not align with his values, he joined the Amoreau family initially to manage commercial and marketing aspects at Château Le Puy, before becoming a partner and taking charge of winemaking direction at the Closerie. It is he who passionately champions this particular philosophy where oxygen, traditionally considered wine's enemy, becomes an ally through infusion fermentation techniques and dynamisation. Together, this team pushes the boundaries of biodynamics and natural winemaking, with extreme attention paid to every detail, from microbial life in the soils to the wine's breathing during ageing.
