Domaine Clau de Nell covers 12 hectares in Ambillou-Château, in the Anjou region, between Angers and Saumur. Acquired in 2008 by Anne-Claude Leflaive and Christian Jacques, this century-old estate has been farmed under Demeter-certified biodynamic practices since 2000, cultivating Cabernet Franc, Grolleau, and Chenin Blanc. Sylvain Potin, estate manager and winemaker since 2009, crafts wines of precision and tension, faithful to Anne-Claude Leflaive's philosophy: placing nature at the heart of winegrowing.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Domaine Clau de Nell, named after the previous owners Claude and Nelly Pichard, dates back over a century. In 2000, this Burgundian winemaking couple set out to reveal the potential of this Angevin hillside by immediately converting the vines to biodynamics and cultivating Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Grolleau. But financial difficulties caught up with them: in 2008, the estate was placed into receivership. At that moment, Anne-Claude Leflaive, an iconic figure of Burgundy and fervent biodynamic advocate, stepped in. Together with her husband Christian Jacques, she had created the company CLAC in 2006, designed to help struggling biodynamic growers export their wines. Captivated by the potential of the vines — some over a hundred years old — and by an exceptional terroir farmed biodynamically for eight years, Anne-Claude and Christian decided to purchase the property to save it from oblivion. In 2009, Sylvain Potin joined the team as estate manager and winemaker. Following Anne-Claude's death in April 2015, Christian has continued her legacy, supported by their three daughters and by Sylvain, now a shareholder and cornerstone of the estate.

Le terroir

The Clau de Nell vineyard extends over 12 contiguous hectares in Ambillou-Château, in the heart of Anjou, between Angers and Saumur. The parcels rise to 101 metres above sea level and are surrounded by forests and meadows, forming an ecosystem conducive to intense biological activity in the soils. The estate's geology is remarkably rich: the first ten centimetres are composed of silty sand derived from fluvial erosion of quartz-rich rocks, followed by layers of sand and clay, before reaching the deep layers of tuffeau, the soft, chalky limestone characteristic of Anjou-Touraine. The parcels also rest on sandstone, red flint, and silty clay. The vineyard comprises 5 hectares of Cabernet Franc (with vines averaging 45 to 60 years of age), 4.5 hectares of Chenin Blanc planted between 2012 and 2018, 2 hectares of Grolleau (with some vines exceeding 90 years), and 1 hectare of Cabernet Sauvignon. Farmed under Demeter-certified biodynamic practices since 2000, the estate employs soil ploughing, natural grass cover between rows, and biodynamic preparations applied according to the lunar calendar. Yields are kept below 30 hectolitres per hectare.

Les vins

The Domaine Clau de Nell range comprises five cuvées, all vinified with native yeasts and aged in historic troglodyte cellars carved into the tuffeau limestone. The Grolleau, a Loire wine in IGP Val de Loire, sourced from very old vines, offers a basket of crisp red fruits — cherries, raspberries, strawberries — enhanced by a spicy and floral touch, with a long, precise finish. The Cabernet Franc, the heart of the range in AOC Anjou, expresses red fruits, spices, and a floral bouquet, carried by silky tannins and a velvety texture. The Violette cuvée blends Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, marrying the spicy, liquorice-tinged generosity of Sauvignon with the freshness and vivacity of Franc, with fine ageing potential. The Chenin Blanc, a dream realised in 2015 thanks to massale selection plantings in 2012 with the invaluable help of Claude and Lydia Bourguignon, unfolds notes of white and yellow fruits, acacia flowers, with a lightly toasted, buttery character, supported by vibrant mineral acidity — an Anjou wine with a Burgundian identity. Finally, the Blanc de Noir, the fifth cuvée unveiled in 2021, is a Cabernet Franc vinified as a white wine, original and elegant. All these wines bear the Clau de Nell signature: purity, precision, tension, and depth.

Le vigneron

Sylvain Potin has been the estate manager and winemaker at Clau de Nell since 2009, when he was hired by Anne-Claude Leflaive in just a few minutes, after a simple walk through the vineyards. Originally from the Angers area, Sylvain first worked as a sommelier at prestigious restaurants, then in wine marketing before turning to production. He acquired solid knowledge of biodynamic viticulture in Chile, and later at several estates in France — experience that did not leave Anne-Claude indifferent. A shareholder in the estate for several years, Sylvain embodies Anne-Claude Leflaive's philosophy: crafting pure and precise wines, placing terroir above all else. Christian Jacques, a civil engineer by training and former head of a Dijon-based construction company for over 30 years, today manages the estate with the energy of a man devoted to the world of wine since he began caring for Clau de Nell in 2006. A sailor and inventive cook, Christian carries on his late wife's philosophy as best as possible. Alongside him, the estate's permanent team consists of Cyril, responsible for the vines since 2015, Arnaud, responsible for the cellar since 2019, and Sonia in administration. Charlotte, one of Anne-Claude and Christian's three daughters, joined the estate in 2022 to handle sales and communication.
