Domaine De la Butte produces outstanding Loire wines within the Bourgueil appellation. Founded in 2002 by Jacky Blot, a Montlouis pioneer, this 14-hectare estate dedicated to Cabernet Franc on limestone slopes ranks among the appellation's finest. Certified organic viticulture, parcel-based vinification and precise élevage yield wines of finesse and purity, now crafted by Jean-Philippe Blot.

L'histoire du domaine

The modern history of Domaine De la Butte is inseparable from another legendary Loire estate: Domaine de la Taille aux Loups in Montlouis-sur-Loire. It was there, during the 1980s, that Jacky Blot first established his reputation by elevating Chenin Blanc to the ranks of France's finest white wines. After more than a decade devoted exclusively to whites, the temptation to apply the same approach to red wines became irresistible. In 2002, following a search across the Loire's Cabernet Franc appellations—Chinon, Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Bourgueil—Jacky discovered an exceptional terroir: 14 hectares in a single block on Bourgueil's limestone hillsides, south-facing and bordered by a protective forest. The estate had been converted to organic viticulture by Francis Poirel under the ownership of Paul Salmon, but the latter put it back on the market after a few years. Jacky Blot seized the opportunity without hesitation. From the 2002 vintage onward, he vinified his first cuvées with the same parcel-based philosophy he had developed in Montlouis. Jacky Blot passed away in May 2023, leaving an immense legacy in the Loire Valley.

Le terroir

Domaine De la Butte extends over 14 to 15 hectares depending on parcels, of which 12 are in a single block, on the hillsides of Bourgueil, right bank of the Loire. The vineyard is planted on calcareous sedimentary rock from the late Cretaceous period—lower Turonian at the foot of the butte, middle and upper Turonian mid-slope, Eocene at the summit—barely covered with clay at the foot and wind-blown sand mid-slope. This geological diversity, combined with the region's typical tuffeau, gives each parcel a distinct identity. The south-facing exposure and permanent presence of limestone provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Franc, the sole grape variety cultivated. Vine age ranges from ten years for the youngest to over fifty years for the oldest parcels. The estate is farmed according to certified organic principles (Ecocert), with deliberately limited yields, manual harvesting and biodynamic practices for certain parcels. Beneath the vines, an immense cellar carved from the rock houses fermentation and élevage.

Les vins

The Domaine De la Butte range is built upon a rigorous parcel-based approach: each cuvée expresses a distinct portion of the hillside and its limestone terroir. Le Pied de la Butte, from the foot of the slope on clay and limestone, offers a fruity, supple and gourmand Cabernet Franc, aged in stainless steel to preserve immediate freshness. Les Perrières, from a gently sloping south-facing parcel with a thin clay layer, reveals fruity intensity and a mineral finish. Le Haut de la Butte, from the summit on poor soils, expresses freshness and finesse with melted tannins. Mi-Pente, considered the estate's grand cru, comes from the most arid mid-slope section on limestone: dense structure, elegant matter, exceptional ageing potential. Les Coteaux du Levant, a cuvée created since 2018, combines freshness and roundness thanks to its exposure. Vinifications take place in truncated wooden vats or concrete tanks, with indigenous yeasts, no chaptalization, élevage in older barrels (maximum 20% new oak for age-worthy cuvées), without fining or filtration.

Le vigneron

Jean-Philippe Blot today embodies both continuity and renewal at Domaine De la Butte. Son of Jacky Blot, he grew up among the vines and developed sharp technical skills alongside his father, first at Domaine de la Taille aux Loups in Montlouis and then in Bourgueil. Trained in the Burgundian approach championed by Jacky—parcel-based vinification, absolute respect for terroir, controlled élevage—Jean-Philippe always knew he would take over. Since his father's sudden passing in May 2023, he has run both family estates alone with the same rigour and passion. His vision is clear: to change nothing in the estate's operations, to perpetuate his father's legacy while bringing his own sensitivity as a new generation. Jean-Philippe continues the rigorous organic viticulture, non-interventionist vinifications, and this constant quest for transparency between terroir and glass. Recent sources confirm that he maintains the house's recognised excellence, producing Loire wines capable of being enjoyed young while offering remarkable ageing potential.
