The Franck Balthazar estate is an emblematic estate of Cornas. Founded in 1931 by Franck Balthazar's grandfather, Casimir Balthazar, the estate has taken a real turn under the impetus of the current manager. Indeed, the latter admires the elegance of Pierre-Marie Clape's wines as well as the natural and unique fruit of Thierry Allemand's wines. He decided to combine these two elements... In 2010, he decided to convert his vineyard to organic farming and worked the soil with a pickaxe and winch. In the cellar, the work is obviously just as careful.

Domaine Balthazar is a benchmark estate in the Cornas appellation in the northern Rhône Valley. Founded in 1931 by Casimir Balthazar, the domaine now extends over 4 hectares of organically certified syrah. Led since 2002 by Franck Balthazar, nephew of the legendary Noël Verset, the estate crafts pure, traditional Cornas from emblematic parcels such as Chaillot, acquired from Noël Verset and planted in 1914.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Domaine Balthazar begins in 1931 when Casimir Balthazar founded the estate and acquired the mythical Chaillot parcel — a founding act that rooted the family in one of Cornas' noblest terroirs. In 1950, his son René took charge of the estate and continued his father's peasant work, selling most of the production in cask to local cafés, as his entire generation did. In the 1970s, inspired by his contemporaries Auguste Clape and Noël Verset, René Balthazar tentatively began domaine bottling, without abandoning bulk sales. The true foundational shift came in 2002: Franck Balthazar, who was working in the textile industry, decided to answer the call of Cornas' steep granite slopes and took over the family estate. From his arrival, he made the radical choice to bottle the entire production, began a full organic conversion in 2010 — certified three years later — and adopted rigorously traditional methods. In two decades, he has built one of the most respected estates in the northern Rhône.

Le terroir

The vineyards of Domaine Balthazar extend over just over 4 hectares spread across the steep slopes of Cornas, where decomposed granite forms the mineral backbone of the terroir. The parcels are planted exclusively to syrah — or more precisely to Sérine, an ancient local clone with small olive-shaped berries that imparts greater aromatic complexity than modern selections. The estate holds century-old vines on the Chaillot lieu-dit, planted in 1914 and acquired from Noël Verset, as well as fifty-year-old vines on Mazards and La Côte. Franck Balthazar has also created new terraces on the steep slopes of Lègre and high-altitude parcels on Les Prés. The vineyard work is of absolute traditionalism: ploughing by hand, winch and sometimes by horse, certified organic farming since 2013, without synthetic fertilizers or products. Each gesture honours the way his grandfather Casimir cultivated these same slopes a century ago.

Les vins

The range at Domaine Balthazar is built around a handful of cuvées that all bear witness to a rigorously traditional approach. Cornas Casimir Balthazar, named in homage to the founder, blends old vines from Mazards and young plantings from Lègre — a powerful and elegant cuvée that forms the ideal entry point to the Balthazar style. Cornas Chaillot is the estate's flagship wine: sourced from century-old syrah on the eponymous lieu-dit, it expresses spectacular depth, concentration and complexity — an archetypal Cornas. The Sans Soufre Ajouté cuvée, crafted from young vines in Lègre, now rivals Chaillot in renown. Since 2019, Franck has also produced Hommage, a parcel micro-cuvée from Chaillot in tribute to his father and grandfather, made in only 600 bottles. There is also a Côtes-du-Rhône from managed vineyards near Séguret, a Crozes-Hermitage and since 2013 a confidential Saint-Péray in pure roussanne. All wines are vinified with whole clusters, fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete vats, then aged in old demi-muids — never new oak. The style is immediately recognisable: purity, balance, perfume and elegance.

Le vigneron

Franck Balthazar embodies the figure of the traditional northern Rhône vigneron — discreet, humble, deeply attached to his granite slopes. Trained in the textile industry, he left a stable job in 2002 to answer the call of the family estate, taking the torch from his father René with quiet determination. Nephew of the legendary Noël Verset, from whom he inherited the century-old Chaillot parcel, Franck quickly established himself as one of the major voices of Cornas, alongside Thierry Allemand and Auguste Clape. A rigorous perfectionist, he cultivates his vines by hand, winch and horse, organically since 2010, and vinifies according to methods unchanged since his grandfather Casimir: whole clusters, indigenous yeasts, long macerations, ageing in old demi-muids, bottling without fining or filtration. Despite growing international renown, Franck Balthazar remains faithful to a simple philosophy: "The greatest reward for me is that people appreciate my wines." A rare humility that shines through in every bottle.
