Château Troplong Mondot, Premier Grand Cru Classé B in Saint-Émilion, crowns the Mondot hill at the highest point of the appellation. Owned by SCOR Group since 2017, the estate cultivates an exceptional clay-limestone terroir over 33 hectares, planted with 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc. Under the leadership of Aymeric de Gironde, former CEO of Cos d'Estournel, the château produces wines of precision and elegance that express the terroir's minerality in a resolutely modern style.

L'histoire du domaine

The history of Troplong Mondot dates back to the 18th century, when the vineyard was created in 1700 on the Mondot site. In 1745, Abbé Raymond de Sèze, from a prestigious Bordeaux family, built the château that still crowns the estate today. The property remained in the de Sèze family for nearly a century before being purchased in 1850 by Raymond-Théodore Troplong, President of the French Senate, who gave his name to the estate and expanded the vineyard to its current size of 33 hectares. After passing through the hands of Belgian négociant Georges Thienpont in the 1920s, the property was acquired in 1936 by Alexandre Valette, a Parisian wine merchant. It was Christine Valette, taking over management in 1980, who radically transformed the estate: manual harvesting, parcel-by-parcel viticulture, temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, reduced yields — innovations that propelled Troplong Mondot to Premier Grand Cru Classé B status in 2006. Following her passing in 2014, the estate was purchased in 2017 by SCOR Group, which entrusted management to Aymeric de Gironde, marking a new era focused on finesse and purity of expression.

Le terroir

Perched at 110 metres altitude atop the Mondot hill, Château Troplong Mondot occupies one of the highest points in Saint-Émilion, benefiting from a 360-degree exposure unique in the appellation. The 33-hectare vineyard in a single block rests on a rare geological mosaic: Agenais molasse interspersed with flint and stones, silty clays and limestone with starfish fossils — a diversity that gives the wines their singular complexity. This clay-limestone terroir escaped the massive erosion that affected other estates in the region, preserving exceptional depth and richness. Sustainable viticulture is conducted with extreme precision: since 2007, Lydia and Claude Bourguignon, soil microbiology specialists, have advised the estate; draught horses work the vines to limit compaction; quincunx planting, natural grass cover and transition to organic farming demonstrate a sustainable commitment. An ultra-modern gravity-fed cellar, completed in 2020, enables plot-by-plot vinification in 42 stainless steel tanks, revealing the potential of each parcel with haute-couture precision.

Les vins

The Troplong Mondot range comprises two distinct cuvées. The grand vin, Château Troplong Mondot, a blend of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, embodies the estate's signature: a wine of finesse and precision, where the terroir's natural power is balanced by vibrant freshness and chalky minerality. The élevage, reduced to 55% new oak complemented by 20-hectolitre foudres and once-used barrels, favours aromatic purity over overt oak influence. Since 2017, the style has evolved towards a more chiselled, less extracted expression, where limestone prevails over clay, revealing floral notes, bright red fruits, citrus and graphite. Mondot, the second wine created in 1985, offers a more accessible introduction to the estate's style, a Merlot varietal characterised by its floral freshness and saline tension. Vintages such as 2005 (100 points Parker), 2022 and 2024 confirm the estate's rediscovered excellence, capable of ageing gracefully for 20 to 30 years.

Le vigneron

Aymeric de Gironde has led Château Troplong Mondot since 2017 as President of the Management Board. Coming from a Cognac family established for over two centuries, trained in Bordeaux and Spain, he forged his vision through experiences at LVMH and alongside Christian Seely at AXA Millésimes, before managing Cos d'Estournel for five years. It was during lunch at Les Belles Perdrix restaurant, invited by Christine Valette, that he fell in love with Troplong Mondot, sensing he would one day lead the estate. Since taking the helm, he has implemented a profound transformation of style: earlier harvesting, gentle extraction through infusion, drastic reduction of new oak, plot-by-plot vinification — choices that have evolved the wines towards remarkable purity, freshness and mineral tension, while preserving the terroir's richness and depth. A man of strong convictions, he embodies holistic viticulture focused on sustainability, having committed the estate to the Paris Agreement and IWCA to achieve carbon neutrality. For him, a great wine must express its place of origin with emotion and complexity — a philosophy he implements daily by walking half the vineyard on foot.
